COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottle. Dark brown with tan head. Aroma of dried3d fruits, belgian yeast esters. Taste of dark fruits, toffee, yeast and nuts. Sweet and bitter, not really my bag.

Potent, overwhelming beer, deep and complex, that has a wide profile combining notes to almonds, cake, milk chocolate, prunes and red wine with some bitterness which is close to spiciness. The overall is robust, well rounded and finished, with a spicy hint in the finish. The cons: the texture could be smoother and not so watery and the red wine notes are too marked. Nothingless, a very good beer, to repeat.

Appearance: Clear dark brown with ruby highlights and 3 finger thick ivory/tan head. Aroma: Bubblegum, banana, mineral, woody, spiritous, toast/bread. Taste: Low/medium sweetness and bitterness, medium sourness. Palate: Light smooth texture, light airy body, prickly carbonation, dry abrupt malty fruity, spicy finish with a slight alcohol warmth. Comments: Lovely and glass lace.

Bottle BB 2016. Dark red/brown beer, mostly opaque, sparkling, huge foamy beige head with nice lacing. Smell - sweet dried fruits, red berries and ribena, a touch of alcohol. Body is medium but very foamy. Taste - very sweet malts, sharp alcohol with a dark fruit and coffee vibe. Nice.

Pours reddish brown, dark, very minimal head. Nose is sweet, dark fruits, raisin, booze, maybe chocolate, rich malts, very aromatic. Taste is dark fruits, raisin, dried figs, chewy, a touch of chocolate, caramel malts, candy sugar. A little too boozy for me, but very complex and a good sipping beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Poured into a trappist glass. A sugary malt scent upon pour. Almost no head. Surprisingly smooth and not as heavily bodied as I thought it might be. Slight cherry taste with a bit of chocolate. Warm as it hits the chest. Potent in the alcohol department. Definitely a sipping beer but enjoyable and very tasty.

330ml bottle from 1420, Leůn.
In short: a boozy belgian quad.
Pours hazy dark copper-amber with frothy tan head, good head retention, some lacing. Roasty, liquor, caramel, nuts aromas. Medium body, viscous texture, average carbonation. Taste is sweet, liquor notes, caramel, roasted flavours, spicy, all among a nice alcoholic load. Despite this is quite well balanced. Very enjoyable.

Aroma - aroma is of caramel, dark fruit sugars, and spice. Appearance - super dark brown, liquid is clean, the head originally frothy and then settles into a fluffy moat that also laces down around the edges of the glass. Head is somewhat off white. Taste - the beer is more on the medium sweet side. Notes of dark fruit, spice and burnt sugar are present, rich alcohol is also abundant. Palate - the body is of medium to full nature, the texture slick and thick, nuances of sticky as well. The carbonation lively in the tongue. The finish bitter and full of booze. A hell of a night cap. Iím full of ABV. Itís super rich and sweet, which Iím not a fan of truly. Itís an ok Quad, but in truth Iím not a big fan of the style. It hits the marks, but to me itís not enjoyable more like work.

At a tasting, many thanks MrHangover, almost no head, quite clear dark brown colour, aroma of dried cherries and apricots, caramel and light oxidised notes, fruity sour flavour with woody and sherry notes, a bit too light bodied. Quite old but still interesting.
