COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Well, once again- quad is not my style of choice. Typical dark quad. not bad, but could be more intense.

Bottle from Supervalu, Longford [161014]
Black with dark brown edges, big frothy tan head, good lacing
Aroma of dark fruits, touch of rum, soft sherry, interesting floral note, slight alcohol, complex
Taste of dark malts, some dark fruits, bit spicy, unusual perfume ester notes, getting some dark chocolate, dab of treacle, complex
Palate - Soft carb, medium to full body, smooth. Sweet palate. Finish as main flavour, soft sweet smooth dark malt finish
Overall - Alcohol really well hidden. Complex. Some interesting notes in this quad - different to others I’ve tried. Very good. Great to see this in the local supermarket.

330ml bottle served in a Trappist chalice. A: Pours a nice deep brown color forming a huge creamy fluffy tan head. Very good retention and many lacings left. A nice creamy layer remains forever S: Very malty and yeasty with notes of alcohol. Dark fruits like plums and raisins. Caramel and candy sugar. Classic Belgian yeasts T: Follows the nose. A classic Belgian Quad, very creamy and molasses. Very bready too. Strong notes of caramel, caramel malts, dark fruits and Belgian yeasts. End is quite bitter with notes of flowery hope. Balanced bittersweet combination M: Heavy creamy molasses body with good carbonation. Bittersweet Belgian style aftertaste O: Great Quad. Excellent beer. Recommend [ BA Review @ 10/7/2012 ]

Strong dark ale since 2010, also bottled in 75 cl bottles. Thick yellowish head, warm dark brown red colour. Complex aroma of bitter chocolate, gin, cream, blackcurrant, coffee, honey, liquorice. Soft, mellow, thick palate with soft fruitiness and pleasant yeasty spiciness on a full, creamy caramelly and chocolatey background, finishing in a roasted bitterness, herbal hops and warming, but not disturbing alcohol. Not sure if this is a quadrupel: to me, the roasted bitterness is just a bit too present not to be called a Scotch. But regardless of that, this is a very enjoyable winter warmer.

Pours a dark coffee brown with a light tan head. Aroma is cocoa, banana, and wood, taste is more pronounced oak and chocolate with a smooth, bittersweet finish. The alcohol is very well camoflauged. Overall a spectacular ale.

Cloudy dark brown beer with a beautiful rocky off-white head. Beautiful lacing as well. Very nice complex aroma of roasty malts, caramel, dark fruits, alcohol and chocolate. Some raisins and wood in there as well. Taste is spicy and moderately sweet with a clear touch of the chocolate and the dark fruits. Maybe a tad too alcoholic, but not that disturbing. Some bitterness as well. Loveable warmishness in the aftertaste that goes accompanied with hints of the caramels and a nice mild bitterness that lasts for quite a while. Bit of an oily and sticky texture, medium bodied with a lively carbonation. Overall a pretty warming beer with a loveable taste. Like said before, maybe a bit too alcoholic, but yet it is quite drinkable as well... Nonetheless, I would love to have another bottle. Enjoyed it.
