COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

UPDATED: SEP 23, 2013 33cl, BB 11/2015. - Pours an unctuous dark brown/purple with solid off-white head. Aroma is is an aromatic and port-like syrup of sweet dark fruits. Taste is immensely layered as you would expect of a quadruple, ranging from intital malt and dark fruit sweetness with heavy alcohol to coffee roast dryness and pronounced hop spice shifting to take centre stage as it warms. Strange effervescence for a beer this heavy. Depending on your drinking needs of the evening, you could dub this mix willfully complex or dramatically confused. What remains is a unique and artfully crafted mahogani master of a quad.

Bottle. Pours brown (like Coke), with a large, tan head. Aroma is toffee, fruit, yeast, malt, and brown sugar. Flavor is toffee, malt, dark fruit, and a little alcohol. A pleasant surprise.

Bottle BB 2016. Dark red/brown beer, mostly opaque, sparkling, huge foamy beige head with nice lacing. Smell - sweet dried fruits, red berries and ribena, a touch of alcohol. Body is medium but very foamy. Taste - very sweet malts, sharp alcohol with a dark fruit and coffee vibe. Nice.

At a tasting, many thanks MrHangover, almost no head, quite clear dark brown colour, aroma of dried cherries and apricots, caramel and light oxidised notes, fruity sour flavour with woody and sherry notes, a bit too light bodied. Quite old but still interesting.
