COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottle at De Halve Maan brewery, Bruges. Poured a really deep mahogany colour, with a big, dense beige head. Massive aroma of prunes, dates, dark malt, black cherries and herbs. Very smooth mouthfeel. Toasted malt in the flavour, with fruitcake and dark rum. Finish was roasted malt, burnt sugar, treacle and slight earth.

glennmastrange (2529) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - DEC 31, 2013
Bottle. Heavy bread, nutty and milk chocolate for the malt, moderate cooked orange for the hops, dough for the yeast, with raisin, dried cherry, wood, toffee, bourbon, with a hint of vinegar and a faint mix of baking spices. Head is small, frothy, light tan with thin slippery lacing and good legs, and is almost fully diminishing to a small ring. Color is clear burgandy. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and finishes moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. Palate is medium to full, syrupy with a flat to soft carbonation, and finishes lightly alcoholic. Though hugely complex itís a very malty and sweet Quadrupel, itís just that the sweetness isnít balanced by any acidity or enough bitterness.

Pours dark brown with only a thin wispy head, which doesnít seem right. Maybe a bad seal or it got shorted on the yeast? Fantastic caramel and plum aroma hits even before lifting the glass. Taste is similar with hints of roasted coffee. Feels a bit flat. Will definitely need to sample another bottle.

At a tasting, many thanks MrHangover, almost no head, quite clear dark brown colour, aroma of dried cherries and apricots, caramel and light oxidised notes, fruity sour flavour with woody and sherry notes, a bit too light bodied. Quite old but still interesting.

Bottle from Samís in Durham. Pours a pleasant caramel brown, a bit hazy. Beige/tan one-finger head. Nose of caramel, stewed fruits, some earth, Belgian sugars and yeast. Solid, if a little boozy. Better warmer and even with some oxidation.

Nice strong milk chocolate colored head of fine and dense bubbles. Rich malty aroma with some milk chocolate, sweet malts, raisins and plums. Color is a deep mahagony brown. Lively mouthfeel with more raisins, caramel malts and a feint hint of tart cherry. Light alcohol presence which is quite surprising for an 11% brew. Surprisingly dry finish with lingering sweet malts and alcohol warming. A pretty good brew.
