COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a large amount of uneven, golden taupe head. Great color of head. Good lacing. Yeasty, mineral aroma. Almost metallic in smell, unfortunately. Caramel, baked apple, and raisin (raw and cooked) scents. Dark malt flavor. A bit of roast. Tangerine. A metallic sweetness as well as some umami. Very subtle flavors. Lightly bitter aftertaste. Fizzy, lively, fluffy, and frothy in the palate. Easy to drink. I’m not feeling this one, to my surprise. I hope it improves with age. Just not much there in complexity or strength, and there are some unfortunate elements in the aroma (along with some pleasant ones).

Pours very dark with fresh spicy aromatics reminiscent of bath beads. A canopy of terminal velocity expands and sticks like a mary lou rettin face plant on the pony boy express. Medium nectar with good carbonation. Very rich and warming with flavors of coffee bean, plum, nectarine, brown sugar. Theres a defined acidity that really holds it all together balancing out all the sugar. The finish lingers long into the session. A classy ale indeed.

Ulkonäöltään olut on tumman ruskea ja punertava. Paksua, hieman ruskehtavaa vaahtoa muodostuu runsaasti.Tuoksussa on karamellia ja tummia hedelmiä. Hieman turhan makea olut. Maussa myös karamellia, rusinoita ja hedelmäisyyttä. Suutuntumaltaan melko runsas ja keskihapokas.

Pours a deep brown color with a large tan head that fades slowly to ample lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, fruit, bit of nut with just a hint of alcohol. The taste is of Roasted malt, fruit, some nut and trace of chocolate as it warms. Has a subtle bitterness and a dry finish. Moderate body, smooth, almost velvety, clean with a richness throughout. As it warms it enhances to character. Great beer to end the day with, an easy sipper that is well worth checking out

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2013 Donker bier met dikke kraag. Stevig bier dat vol in de mond ligt en vol van smaak is. Overrijp fruit en port domineren de smaak.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2014 Bottle from Beers of Europe. Mid to dark brown, reasonably translucent. A fair bit of carbs and khaki head. Full aroma of molasses and plum pudding. The taste is sweet but manages to stay rounded. There’s a full alcoholic kick as well. Very warming on a horrid January night.
