COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottled. Dark and hazy ruby colour, frothy medium-sized head. Aroma is full of dark fruits, dried plums and fermented fruits. A whiff of alcohol mixing with molasses and slightly burnt sugar. Pleasant, coocked perry, banana and colves from the yeast. Dryish yeasty, surprisingly bitter flavor let darker malt and sugar aromas shine. Soft and smooth, deviously light palate. A very well balanced quadrupel.

2010 vintage, carefully cellared at my local distributors warehouse. Pours dark brown with a fair amount of sediment and a khaki head that settles down to a thicker ring and leaves some spots of soapy lace. Nose involves dark candy sugar, some caramel apple, brown bread, pinot noir, some alc vapors, plums. Quite sweet, somewhat bitter, a touch tart. Full bodied, chewy texture, oily, fair action, some alc heat, with a drying toasty bitter finish. Pretty badass, I must say. Lots of cool shit going on. Restrained, yet powerful.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2014 Bottle from Beers of Europe. Mid to dark brown, reasonably translucent. A fair bit of carbs and khaki head. Full aroma of molasses and plum pudding. The taste is sweet but manages to stay rounded. There’s a full alcoholic kick as well. Very warming on a horrid January night.

From a 330 ml bottle, deep red pour with a small foamy head, decent carbonation, in the aroma cherries, berries, candy sugar, pistachio nuts, Finish is quite short it’s sweet in the mouth but the finish is smooth and well balanced. Hides the 11% abv well. Top quality.
