COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

330ml bottle served in a Trappist chalice. A: Pours a nice deep brown color forming a huge creamy fluffy tan head. Very good retention and many lacings left. A nice creamy layer remains forever S: Very malty and yeasty with notes of alcohol. Dark fruits like plums and raisins. Caramel and candy sugar. Classic Belgian yeasts T: Follows the nose. A classic Belgian Quad, very creamy and molasses. Very bready too. Strong notes of caramel, caramel malts, dark fruits and Belgian yeasts. End is quite bitter with notes of flowery hope. Balanced bittersweet combination M: Heavy creamy molasses body with good carbonation. Bittersweet Belgian style aftertaste O: Great Quad. Excellent beer. Recommend [ BA Review @ 10/7/2012 ]

Pours very dark mahogany with a large fizzy beige head. Smells strongly of dark fruits with subtle candy sweetness. Taste is sweet, fruity, and hints of caramel. Full-bodied with a smooth texture and fizzy mouth-carbonation, Straffe Hendrik Brugs Quadrupel finishes with a slight tingle of alcohol warmth.

Brune très foncée, pétillance faible, quasi pas de mousse. Malts rôtis et caramélisés, présence d’orange et de fruits foncés, belles notes de chocolat. Alcool un peu trop présent.

Bottle. Dark chocolate pour with a thick mid-tan head. Nose is out of this world; some dark berries, cherry and blackcurrant, some toffee and treacle, caramel and raisins. Freshly spun sugar. I could plop my nose in the glass all day, but I’m desperate to see if it lives up to it in the taste... wham! It does, sort of - quite a thick drink, and those dark berries give it a sort of vinous quality but that 11% ABV makes itself know quite early on. A mild alcohol burn and a whack of alcohol tastes somewhat overpowers this and takes away from the malty warm profile it would otherwise have. I think this could benefit greatly from ageing. Delicious, if a little overbearing.

Appearance: Clear dark brown with ruby highlights and 3 finger thick ivory/tan head. Aroma: Bubblegum, banana, mineral, woody, spiritous, toast/bread. Taste: Low/medium sweetness and bitterness, medium sourness. Palate: Light smooth texture, light airy body, prickly carbonation, dry abrupt malty fruity, spicy finish with a slight alcohol warmth. Comments: Lovely and glass lace.

11.2 oz bottle. 2012 release, aged ~2 years. Pours brown, almost mahogany and translucent. Plenty of carbonation, decent lacing. Aroma improves as it warms, kind of muted when it’s cold. I agree with description regarding palate and tastes...palate is just a bit dry. I messed up and didn’t taste this beer fresh, so it’s hard to compare 2 years old, but it’s great after aging! I really like this brewery, pretty much everything I’ve had from them is awesome.

12oz bottle, I’m usually not a quad fan, but this beer is the stuff. Complexity in this beer that is for sure. Fruits, citrus, caramel, pepper flavors, big 11%abv. Well-balanced, interesting good taste. Long finish, warming sensation. I would highly recommend.
