COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

750 ml corked and caged bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of toffee, carmel, grape and light cherry. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, cherry, light earthiness and light tobacco with a smooth lingering toffee finish.

Bottle. Pours mostly clear dark brown with a large, creamy and frothy light tan head, long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is dark fruity esters (dates, plums, figs), earthy and woody hops, caramel and cookie malt, and lightly toasted grains. Flavor is malt dominant with dark fruity esters, cellar and wood notes, light hops and bitterness with spicy and peppery alcohol. Full body and medium carbonation, accentuated by the alcohol bite.

from Au Grain díOrge, Neuch‚tel - hazy ruby-brown colour with a solid dark beige foam; nice lacework; aroma of yeast and pears; very sweet and full-bodied; lot of residual sugars, esters, yeast and more fruity tones

330ml bottle (Bier Tempel, Bruges)
6 Pleasantly rich and roasty malts in the aroma, a touch of treacle toffee, but alas thereís some alcohol coming over too.
4 Deep reddy brown, but poured perfectly clear, initially a healthy light beige head, which settles to a ring, and finally disappears after maybe half an hour.
6 Full nettly retronasals, quite spicey and almost anaesthetic. Taste? Hmm, well, with the hops and the alchol this actually is anaesthetic - itís hard to pinpoint details. General feel is that of a rich, slightly burnt roast, and earthy bitterness.
4 Smooth sweet palate, short of slick. OK carbonation. Mouthfeel as I hinted at in the taste is a little numbing, the hops are tingling, and the alcohol compounds that. Finish is a little yeasty and earthy at first. Itís not unpleasant thought, and even has some coffee or burnt nutty aspects later (1-3 minutes after swallowing).
13 Theyíve pushed the boat out on the OG, and could have created a monster. Itís just kept sane, and ends up being pretty tasty, but lacking any wow features. In some ways being this tasty at 11% is a bit of wow. Itís the spiciness of the yeast combined with the biting bitterness of the hops and the, to me, high residual sugars that basically batters the booze into the ground and just says "donít ask, donít tell". Itís only the fools who look at the label who will know the truth.

Bottle @ home aged probably 18 months since purchasing in Colorado. Not sure I ever had Straffe Hendrik while in Bruges but excited to have it now. Pours a somewhat murky brownish appearance with a thin but decent light brown head. Quite rich woody/bourbon-esque, spicy, dark chocolate, herbal, moderately dark fruity aroma that is very interesting. Chewy yeasty, tangy, big raisin, plum, blueberry, toffee, chocolate, rich candy sugar flavor. Fun to drink. Would buy again.

Butilka: Deep ruby-amber coloured, almost clear, small and stable off-White foamy creamy layer; sweet raisins, molasses, sweet wine and caramel in the pretty complex nose, ornated by traces of chocolate; moderate to solid sweet and - subdued - bitter flavour, full bodied; lingering sweet-vinous and aramelly finish with some cacao in the very end. Good,good...

Bottle split at JFís, 26/12/13. Extremely dark mahogony brown with a good sized biege head that dissipates to pondwork, Nose is sweet, rich caramel, dark toffee fudge, dates, raisens, booze. Taste comprises Xmas Cake, liqourice, toffee, hint of cocoa, sweet tasting, rich caramel, nutty tang, dark fruits. Full bodied, fine carbonation, warming alcohol in the finish. Ok easy drinking quad but lacks a little complexity and finesse.

Bottled sample at the 2nd Annual Top of the Hops Charlottesville, VA beer festival, 9/10/11. Pours a slightly hazy copper-brown color with a medium sized brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of berries, cherries and brown sugar. The taste is big brown sugar notes, toffee, berries, bready notes and a spicy finish. Medium bodied. Nice.

(bottle, 33cl) Slightly hazy, dark and reddish amber colour with a beige medium-sized foamy head. Sweet and slightly sugary toast-malty aroma with present notes of dark berries. Sweet flavour with a present level of roasty bitterness in the background, full bodied with a modest carbonation. Moderately roasted malty taste with berry-fruits, a delicately spicy touch, as well as a whiff of chocolate; sweet and slightly roasty bitter finish with noticeable alcoholic notes. Likeable. 03.IV.12
