COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

black with ruby reflexes, small but long-lasting tanned foam; dark berries, floral, some chocolate or coffee; medium sweetness, lightly bitter, noticable alcohol; full body, thick feel, average carbonation, long dry finish; Overall: there are better quadruples (alcohol a little bit too noticable) but still, it’s a very good beer

Bottle from Voldby Købmandsgaard. Dark brown colour with a small head. Very nice taste of caramel, dark berries, toffee, some chocolate notes. Good texture. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Warm alcohol taste with a nice light bitterness in the finish. Very good beer.

Dark brownish red pour with large fluffy tan head. Aroma of caramel, malt, dark fruit and alcohol. Taste of burnt sugar, caramel, fig and a definite alcohol warmth present. A little too boozy on the dry finish, good beer though.

Tap at Fermentoren Aarhus. The pour is clear, dark reddish brown with a big, tan head. Aroma has lots of dark dried fruits like plums, dates and figs. Also banana, toffee and a mild roast is present. Taste has a little licorice, but is carried by the same sweet fruits and caramel notes. Despite that, the licorice and freshness from the fruits are balancing it out quite nicely. Full body and medium to low carb. Pretty good, and maybe even underrated quad(compared to others) imo.

Poured from a corked bottle in a Great Lakes tulip glass. Big pop of cork...pours a dark brown with big amber head. Aroma of dark malts, alcohol, and malt sweetness. Moderate carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of dark roasted malts, alcohol, caramel, molasses, dark chocolate, milk chocolate. Overall big and bold with a big alcohol strength coming through over the big malt body. After 10 minutes the alcohol resides a good amount.

Un très joli sigle de bouteille. Nearly the design of the Moonlight Brewing Company from California. A bucolic corner of the Sonoma Valley for this one, and the historical medieval city of Bruges for the other one... But the most important is what you will find in your glass !!! About the Straffe Hendrik quadruple, we have two things to say first : 1. A member of the Belgian Family Brewers, and an old story beginning in 1856 with the family Maes (not the one of the pils producer !!), and a first mention of brewing in 1546 !!! 2. One of the rare belgian beers with the name of « quadruple », unusual in our vocabulary. I have also seen that beer qualified as a barley wine. Let us see... First of all, a very high level : 11 % abv. A very dark color, very encouraging... Un conseil : try it, and after that you see a moonlight brewing in the sky...

750 ml corked bottle, best before October 2016. Apperance is muddy brown, witha thick layer of creamy head that is built to last. Aroma is nutmeg, rasins, brown sugar, and sweet bread. Taste is a light bitterness up front, followed by nutmeg, clove, caramel, and rasin, finishes with some malty biscuit sweetnees and a touch of bitterness. Velvety mouthfeel, lots of carbonation, very little hint of booze. Overall, this a nicely balanced and complex quad, a very nice sipper on a cold winter night.
