COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottle 330ml @ Geokkjer
Pours reddish deep brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, dried fruits, alcohol and yeast. Taste is heavy sweet and light bitter with a very fruity and warm finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Sample shared by a friend. Dark brown pour with a thin beige head that recedes quickly to a wispy film. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit and chocolate. Full-bodied and somewhat chewy with flavors of chocolate malt, plums, caramel and yeast. The finish is fruity up front with a toasted malt aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Butilka: Deep ruby-amber coloured, almost clear, small and stable off-White foamy creamy layer; sweet raisins, molasses, sweet wine and caramel in the pretty complex nose, ornated by traces of chocolate; moderate to solid sweet and - subdued - bitter flavour, full bodied; lingering sweet-vinous and aramelly finish with some cacao in the very end. Good,good...

330ml bottle perfectly served at De Halve Maan. Very alluring with its deep, rosewood coloured body and patchy surface. Mid-sweet aroma of dark fruits. Blended taste profile of dark malts and dark fruits added by dark spices. Full bodied with warming alcohol. Good drinking early on a Monday (Brugge, 02.05.2011).

Bottle. Very dark brown with red tints and a beige foam. Aromas are marzipan and coffee with chocolate. Alcohol with vinous notes. Flavours are vinous with warming alcohol and marzipan. Indeterminate malts with, as previously mentioned, strong glue. Dry berries with berries and pepper to finish. Weird but decent.

(bottle, 33cl) Slightly hazy, dark and reddish amber colour with a beige medium-sized foamy head. Sweet and slightly sugary toast-malty aroma with present notes of dark berries. Sweet flavour with a present level of roasty bitterness in the background, full bodied with a modest carbonation. Moderately roasted malty taste with berry-fruits, a delicately spicy touch, as well as a whiff of chocolate; sweet and slightly roasty bitter finish with noticeable alcoholic notes. Likeable. 03.IV.12

330 ml bottle. L B. BB D/13. From Belgium. Courtesy of Brandman.
Dark brown colour with a small greyish white head. Surprisingly sweet malty aroma with some tartness, alcohol and saltiness. The flavour is salty soy sauce, dark fruits, cola, malt, some sweetness, mild yeast and a bit of hops. Not very complex nor interesting. Some alcohol there too.

My Bottom Line:
Pecan pie and bubblegum mingle with charming flowers and cocoa in this most elegant Quadrupel.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam decorates a brown that’s as shiny as can be (for that color).
-Body is light and fluffy, which is impressive for such a potent brew.
-The nutty character could also evoke chestnuts.
-Alcohol warms up the finish, but delicately so.

Bottle.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks beerandbeyond. Dark brown color. Aroma of alcohol, malt, caramel and lots of dark fruits (prunes, plums and raisins). Sweet malty flavor with caramel, demerara sugar, a bit of molasses and lots of dark fruits. Medium-bodied, a bit heavy.
