COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottle 33cl. Dark brown, near black with a light brown head. Aroma has caramel and sweetness. Not too special. But then you taste it and you?re taken to a lovely world of caramel, warmness, chocolate, coffee(?) and lots more. Lots of Co2 too. But it?s all balanced. This beer is art.

Bottle. Dark dark brown, zero light penetrates the beer. Frothy foam head. Aromas are quite fruity, potatoes, raisins, bubblegum. Boozy, sensation like breathing in hairspray. On to the taste. Sweet from the onset, cherries / cherry liquor, licorice, salmiak, dried apricorns, caramelized apples, gentle creaminess runs throughout. Sweet fruity high dominates. I would compare it to Gulden Draak, althought this is less fruity. Compared to Trappist beers, this is definitely much much fruitier. Interesting.

11.2 oz bottle, purchased at Total Wine, Gilbert, AZ. Pours a beautiful dark ruby red, with big creamy/tan head. Aroma is pure Belgium. Spicy, fruity, malty and boozy. Taste is complex; sweet rich malt, with dark fruit and berries, yeast and candy sugar. Finish is chewy, boozy and smooth. A real winter warmer. This is what quadrupel is all about!

Very full and nice fermented, rich in flavor - orange, caramel, southern fruits. Very, very fruitful with nice roast bi-taste. Quality beer.

I can smell it already and ive only started pouring it, sweet malt and dark fruits aroma, pours dark brown with a lightly tanned head. Quite smooth on the palate with flavours of dark fruit, caramel and brown sugar. So well balanced, would not have guessed an eleven percenter. What an awesome Quadrupel!

Belle quadruple brune.

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2014 (Drinking date: 22 April 2014) Pitchblack colour with no foam. Nice aroma of ripe dark fruits and chocolate and salted liqorice and alcohol. But could have been more intense. The taste is nice. It starts sweet and it ends bitter, with a kind of liqorice-sweetness. The mouthfeel is not really good. The body is too watery, and the carbonation too heavy. I would have liked a more full body and with a less intense carbonation. Overall this is a good and delicious beer, but not the best and most delicious quad that exists. The aroma could have been more intense and the mouthfeel should have been better. But still a good one! That?s why I give it the total score of 3.7!

Dark brown color when held towards the light. Large head with very good retention and lacing. Sweet malt and brown sugar in the aroma. Also quite boozy. After tasting I was surprised. It wasn’t as sweet as I expected, and I liked that. Also it didn’t feel like 11% ABV. Medium body with light carbonation. Easy to drink in spite of the high ABV. Overall a very nice quad, I enjoyed it more then some of the bigger names.

Not a lot on the nose, as this dark brown beer pours a thin head that stays with the beer. Tastes of malt, malt and more malt, with brown sugar at the back. Are there hops in here? If so, they are way in the background. But this meant to be sweet and strong. Probably lacks a bit of body for an 11% beer. As it warms, aroma of roasted something (nuts?) and vinious hints come through. Nice, but can’t help think it should be nicer....just needs to be mire full bodied
