Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

A well rounded and restrained quad offering initially distinct components which merge to create an enjoyably sweet and earthy ale from start to finish

A very deep mahogany body supports a 1", desaturated khaki head which falls to a thick, solid ring and thin continent producing thick yet fleeting, arcing peninsulas of lace
Smooth, well controlled candied sugars lead the way, introducing raisins, blueberries, figs, and prunes complimented by lighter, juicy sweet notes of apple and pear, married by dark caramel and molasses nuances, all rounded by a light finishing layer of milk chocolate on a smooth, medium body with restrained carbonation for the style, leaving a light, silky, sugary coating; residuals are a blended sense of the aromas and flavors with a building influence of clove and fruity ester finishing with a flair of alcohol warmth collaborating to communicate a sense of raw honey; I generally experience fall leaves and thanksgiving desserts, warm and sweet, but with a humble earthy character

Classic quad profile. Aromas and flavors of dark fruit, prune, caramelized stonefruit, banana, molasses, cola, spices and Belgium yeast. Smooth, medium-medium-plus body, with fine carbonation and a touch of bitterness in the relatively sweet/semi-dry finish.. Alcohol is very well integrated. Well balanced. Elegant, lingering nuances of cola, spice and Belgium yeast. Solid, though not my absolute favorite. Overall, I guess I prefer a little more concentration in my quad. This was elegant throughout, which I'm sure will make many people happy. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...

.3l pour from chilled bottle into sniffer glass at Brickmakers in Vienna. Fairly aggressive pour produced a moderate and fizzy off-white head. Dark brownish red, nearly totally opaque, evident carbonation. Nose is a little earthy, some dark fruit (cherry?), some woodiness, and maybe even a little soy sauce. Body is full and fizzy. Sharp up front with strong carbonation throughout. I bet that’d mellow out with a little aging, and I think I’d prefer it that way. Taste is licorice, plum, wood, maybe some dirt, raisin. Some pretty nice layers in there. Not too boozy, bitter, or sweet. Surprisingly balanced. Not a bad sipping beer.

A dark, non transparant beer with a firm, slightly brown layer of foam. It has a lot of alcohol in it’s aroma, together with the touch of licorice and caramel. A nice, bitter taste like dark chocolate. The aftertaste is quite bitter, and remains for a while.

Pours dark brown. No foam, no carbonation. Aromas are very nice: candied fruit, yeast, roasty malt. Mouth is a bit smoky, yeast focused with rich English cake-like notes ... but there is no carbonation at all. Something was wrong with that batch. it will be worth tasting it again.
