COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks beerandbeyond. Dark brown color. Aroma of alcohol, malt, caramel and lots of dark fruits (prunes, plums and raisins). Sweet malty flavor with caramel, demerara sugar, a bit of molasses and lots of dark fruits. Medium-bodied, a bit heavy.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2011 Had this at Carmargue, Berchem, Antwerp, Belgiew 19-03-11. Glowing rich red ruby coloured beer with superb clarity, looks great. Alcohol sits very heavy in the mouth and there is a bittreness the persists throughout. Not sure whether this is a bit raw /young but it doesn’t work well for me, in fact the bitterness is quite harsh and quite medicinal at times, not really my thing couldn’t even finish it. Bottle with a best before of December 2013. Pours with an absolutely massive, creamy, lively, lightly tan head over a murky brown body. Hugely overcarbonated. Very fine bubbles. Good retention. Decent to good lacing. Aroma of ginger, clove, brown sugar, dark fruit and booze. Hugely phenollicy and estery. Clove, nutmeg, curacao orange, pear. Perfumey and floral. Hard to tell if there is a hop note with all the strong esters (interplay?). Malt bill is bready, special b (raisiny), dark fruit, caramelized. Eye watering amount of aromatics. Vanilla. Flavors of alcohol, dark fruit, bitter curacao orange, spicy, persimmons, complex. Bitter balance, a decent richness and boozy. Huge esters, phenols. Pear. Floral, aromatic. Huge warming and fusel alcohol presence. Lively to fizzy bubbles, lingering bitter. Carbonation builds the body. Intense and off balance.

Bomber. Reddish brown pour - rich looking. Aroma is dark fruit and dark chocolate. Just a bit of booze. All the elements are there, but not quite as standout as St. Bernardus or Rochefort.

Bottle. Lovely auburn colour with a low light brown head, no lace. Aroma is spicy and yeasty and sweet, leading into a palate filled with chewy sweet brown sugar, dried figs, dried apricots, sultanas, and hints of dark cherries and tea. Very complex, warming without being harsh. One of the most enjoyable quads I’ve had in a while.

Bottle. High creamy and lasting off-white head. Almost black very dark red brown body. Solid roasted malt caramel straw cocoa aroma and flavor with a nice hops bitterness, low carbonation and a long finish. Well balanced and the alcohol is hidden very well.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2011 Bottle from Beermerchants. Deep ruby with a fine cappuccino collar going the distance. Deep enticingly Belgian aroma; mouldering plum, dark mushy grape skins, orange liqueur stirred with a Twiglet, star anise, maybe some spiced green tea...not to mention a hearty dose of booze. Hot, yeasty and slick with an instant burn in the throat; wheat and orange peel tang, squashy stone fruits not quite dried, aniseed, finishing alcohol. Hard work at first, especially if its the first beer of the night, but opens up with a certain Belgian..something. A sharer, even in a 330ml bottle.

Bottle @ Home. Pours ebony with a fluffry offwhite head. Aroma of malt, caramel, dark chocolate, plums, light spices. Taste is malt, sweet caramel, hints of chocolate, licorice, port, dark dried fruit. Full body, rather high carbonation, some alchohol in the finish. Good without been outstanding. 030711
