COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Very nice dark brown deep red color. Good full body and lively carbonation. Taste is good also, but it’s a beer you’ll want to drink at the end of the evening.

Bottle. Lovely auburn colour with a low light brown head, no lace. Aroma is spicy and yeasty and sweet, leading into a palate filled with chewy sweet brown sugar, dried figs, dried apricots, sultanas, and hints of dark cherries and tea. Very complex, warming without being harsh. One of the most enjoyable quads I’ve had in a while.

330 ml bottle. L B. BB D/13. From Belgium. Courtesy of Brandman.
Dark brown colour with a small greyish white head. Surprisingly sweet malty aroma with some tartness, alcohol and saltiness. The flavour is salty soy sauce, dark fruits, cola, malt, some sweetness, mild yeast and a bit of hops. Not very complex nor interesting. Some alcohol there too.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is medium to dark orange-brown. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, toasted nuts, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers, apricot), lightly yeasty (cobwebs, basement), with notes of orange peel and coriander. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. All in all better than expected. The aroma is a bit mild and nothing more exciting than "pleasant", but it is indeed enjoyable. And the mouth experience is quite pleasing considering the style. All too often quads are hard to drink due to being too sweet and/or syrupy and/or alcoholic. Or even sometimes too light and watery with some native Belgian examples where too much candy sugar is used in place of malt. But this one is in a nice little sweet spot with respect to flavor balance and mouthfeel...it’s frighteningly quaffable but does not forsake body and malt richness, which is a rare quality. Maybe just a tad watery, but all things considered it avoids the pitfalls inherent with the style well. And on the tongue, the 11% seems much more like 8 or 9%. Not a "wow" rendition but well done.

Bottle:   Deep deep brown, moderate frothy sandy head, spotty lacing.   Soft dark pitted fruits and apple skin on a bed of bready alcohol.   Bright and spritzy up front, warming, strong apple skin.   Not as much dark pitted fruit as the nost suggested, even as minor as it was.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, seemingly more bubbley than most.   By the finish there is a bit more dark pitted fruit, but its overshadowed with a champagne like spritzy alcohol flair.   Pale fruit skin seems to reside start to finish.   While appearing to be a quad, it comes across as a bit lighter in body, flavor, but not in alcohol.   Tiz okay, but needs to be heavier and perhaps breadier with more dark pitted fruit in there.   Glad to have tried it tho.   Thanks Jason for the bottle!

Bottle from City Beer. Pours dark brown with a massive beige head and a sourish aroma. There is a rich plum and treacle flavor that is hella tasty. A nice quad.
