Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

On Tap at the Bekeerde Suster, Amsterdam. Clear dark red beer, big cream coloured head. The head tastes of fruity sherbet! Rich complex beer. Dr Pepper and creamy malt kick off. Mild licorice spice. Caramel. A little fruit salad sweets towards the finish. Minerals. Carbonated bite in the finish. A really tasty lip smacking beer, hides the 11.0% really well. Lovely!

Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a large foamy tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sweet sugar, cherry, plum and caramel. The flavor was sugar, ripe dark fruits, caramel and touches of wood, herbs, fig and nut. A bit boozy. The finish was long, sugary, fruity and had a lingering booziness. Fairly full bodied. Nice.

On tap @ Get Real NY Belgian Fest. This was downstairs kinda by itself but real glad I found it. Smells great of port wine and dark fruits. tastes of sweet yet burnt sugar, cherries, plums, and other dark fruits, caramel, wood, nuts, and finishes boozy. Remind myself to grab this beer again come winter.

11.2 ounce bottle - hazy purple - clingy, thick lace for something so strong - nose of plum, fig, treacle, vinous notes, doughy yeast - quite a creamy body for the strength - sweet treacle/pudding up front, followed by fairly complex notes of plum, raisin, chocolate - dries out a bit through the middle, bringing notes of spices and dried flowers - finish of fruit skins, spice and an almost barleywine-ish maltiness - nicely balanced and quite tasty.

33 cl bottle. Dark brown body with an offwhite head that sticks to the glass. Caramel, chocolate and coffee in the nose. The taste has roasted malt, dark chocolate and flavor of coffee in it. There’s a slight bitterness on the background. Great beer!
