COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Tap, 25 cl @ Brugs Bierfestival. Dark brown beer with a medium creamy beige head, perfectly tapped (!), nice lacing. Aroma is quite similar to the Straffe Hendrik Tripel: malty, with some hops and sweetness included, dark fruits are extra to the Quadrupel. The taste at first sight also: strong malty taste, light sweet beer, grassy finish of hops. But the further you drink, the more comes to the foreground: instead of malts you discover these are roasted malts, a caramel taste on the background, dark fruits are also coming to the foreground. The Quadrupel has the same specific taste as the Tripel (or you are fan who likes this taste or you arenít), but has so much more to serve you. Excellent choice, this quadrupel! (btw: excellent beer for my 300th rating!)

Bottle, bought @ Vinens Verden, Odense.
A beautiful deep ruby red colour with a fine, staying, frothy, off-white head on top. Aroma has prunes, raisins, some mild cherries, caramel malts, vinious, mild oranges, slight coriander and plums. Highish carbonation, fine creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is very nice, good caramel base, light biscuit, some coriander. Quite vinious with plums, raisins and a mild roasted note. Very good, even if the alcohol is a bit too apparent.

Bottle at Christian Firtal. Deep ruby with a lasting off-white head. Inviting fruity aroma with plums, dates, raisins and port wine, with an underlying spicy note. Sweetish flavour with equal parts dried fruit, caramel, alcohol heat and spice (anise, licorice, coriander notes). The alcohol is notable and rather hot, but reasonably well integrated

Bottle shared at the May Santa Cruz tasting. Pours a dark cola color with a poofy tan head. Aromas of yeasty brown bread, candi sugar, vanilla, alcohol. Flavors of dark and red fruits with coriander, fruitcake, raisin, vanilla, licorice, and booze. A bit too hot and perfumey on the palate at 11 percent.

This beer is quite strong on alcohol. It works with this taste though. You can smell the alcohol a bit, a long with some caramel notes. Beer is nicely balanced.

Serving: 11.2 oz. bottle at Fire Works Leesburg. It pours a hazy brown color with a dense, light tan head. the nose is slightly spicy with light Belgian yeast notes, and a hint of banana. The flavor takes a mellow malt route with some dried fruit, dusty yeast notes, dried banana, and light bubble gum. Medium bodied with high carbonation and a slightly dry finish thanks to the high ABV. A solid quad.

Pours dark brown with bubbly tan head. Sweet grainy aroma full of fruits. The flavor is great rounded Belgian dark malts that match the rich rounded candied fruits with a toffee and light chocolate note. Itís a bit crazy but still really easy to drink and write tasty.

Deep clear mahogany orange body with a large tan colored head. Pungent sweet vanilla, dried light fruits and christmas spices on the nose. Smooth, full bodied and alcoholic. Pungent sweet and bitter with toasted notes and spicy roasted hints. Dry tongue. Even warms the throat.
