COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2013 Donker bier met dikke kraag. Stevig bier dat vol in de mond ligt en vol van smaak is. Overrijp fruit en port domineren de smaak.

Shared a bottle for Thanksgiving. Really smooth sweet quad with no head or lacing but dangerous in that the alcohol level is hardly noted. plenty of dried fruits and wine notes/

33cl bottle. Dark brown colour with a good formation of tan head but quickly diminishes in a thin layer. Aroma has chocolate hints, slightly spiced, toasted malts and caramel. Flavour is bready, with brown sugar trace,s sweet and chocolate at the beginning. Dense on palate, the final is long and with candy sugar taste although also slightly bittery too. Carbonation is soft. Body is high. Texture is oily.

33 cl bottle. Clear, dark brown liquid with small to medium off-white to tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, belgian yeast, sweet/dark malt, roasted malt, unrefined sugars and noble hops. Taste is medium sweet, light bitter and has notes of unrefined sugars, fruits and nice, noble hops. Medium bodied with good carbonation. More hopped than most quads which makes it very balanced. Nice.

Bottle. Poured a clear ruddy brown color. The head was exuberant and tan with good retention. Dark fruits, clove, hay, alcohol, and a dash of brown sugar in the nose. Medium bodied and slightly sweet up front. Dry and earthy at the end with prickly carbonation and a warming alcohol effect.

Tap, 25 cl @ Brugs Bierfestival. Dark brown beer with a medium creamy beige head, perfectly tapped (!), nice lacing. Aroma is quite similar to the Straffe Hendrik Tripel: malty, with some hops and sweetness included, dark fruits are extra to the Quadrupel. The taste at first sight also: strong malty taste, light sweet beer, grassy finish of hops. But the further you drink, the more comes to the foreground: instead of malts you discover these are roasted malts, a caramel taste on the background, dark fruits are also coming to the foreground. The Quadrupel has the same specific taste as the Tripel (or you are fan who likes this taste or you aren’t), but has so much more to serve you. Excellent choice, this quadrupel! (btw: excellent beer for my 300th rating!)

Bottle, bought @ Vinens Verden, Odense.
A beautiful deep ruby red colour with a fine, staying, frothy, off-white head on top. Aroma has prunes, raisins, some mild cherries, caramel malts, vinious, mild oranges, slight coriander and plums. Highish carbonation, fine creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is very nice, good caramel base, light biscuit, some coriander. Quite vinious with plums, raisins and a mild roasted note. Very good, even if the alcohol is a bit too apparent.

Bottle at Christian Firtal. Deep ruby with a lasting off-white head. Inviting fruity aroma with plums, dates, raisins and port wine, with an underlying spicy note. Sweetish flavour with equal parts dried fruit, caramel, alcohol heat and spice (anise, licorice, coriander notes). The alcohol is notable and rather hot, but reasonably well integrated
