COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Bottle at Mikey’s event. Pours a dark amber/brown color with a medium beige head. A big nutty and berries nose. Some heat, toffee, caramel, strawberries, a bit of tobacco. Nice.

Top!

Bottle@Brussels, July 2012. Murky dark brown color, tan head. Hoppy aroma with a hint of alcohol. Warming flavor with hops, juicy malts, dark chocolate, lavender, vanilla and plum. Wow. Full body, high carbonation. Very nice.

Poured from a corked bottle in a Great Lakes tulip glass. Big pop of cork...pours a dark brown with big amber head. Aroma of dark malts, alcohol, and malt sweetness. Moderate carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of dark roasted malts, alcohol, caramel, molasses, dark chocolate, milk chocolate. Overall big and bold with a big alcohol strength coming through over the big malt body. After 10 minutes the alcohol resides a good amount.

Caramel, toffee, bread, and dark fruit in the aroma. Flavor starts sweet and bready, with some fruit and spice. Finish is more bitter than I expected, with lots of drying alcohol and more spice flavor. Like most quadrupels, this has lots and lots of flavor--a really nice cold night sipper.

Bomber. Reddish brown pour - rich looking. Aroma is dark fruit and dark chocolate. Just a bit of booze. All the elements are there, but not quite as standout as St. Bernardus or Rochefort.

Good quadruple. Pours a dark beer with an off-white head. Aroma: dried fruits, caramel, alcohol. Taste: sweet with a sweet and slighty bitter finish. Palate: exemplary for the style, good carbonation. Very nice quadruple.
