Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Beautiful beer. Draft at Cheeky Monk, proper glassware. Poured a really nice had which persisted throughout the session. Lovely, sweet nose. Flavor was big yet very approachable, none of the wild notes I sometimes find in Belgian strongs. Compared next to St Bernardus 12 and preferred the nose and palate of this one. Delightful!

Bottle at Boekencafe Schrijvers, Eindhoven. Pours dark copper brown almost black with creamy lasting off-white head. Aroma is very fragrant with malt, caramel, apples, melon, yeast, wine and alcohol with hints of dill and fennel. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. Body is creamy with good carbonation. Finish is heavy bitter with licorice, yeast and strong fruity notes. Very good beer!

Dark, really good beer. Creamy head. Slight after taste or would be perfect. I bought at random in a Liege Belgium grocery along with three others. This was definitely the best of the group. Not as sweet as Rochefort 10 (my favorite other than Westvleteren 12) but good enough that I will definitely recommend and buy again.

A very finely crafted beer, truly a delight. For 11 percent you might think this beer to be too strong, and although you definatley get an initial whiskey-like taste, it is soon followed by a sweet, caramel finish.

Pours a dark coffee brown with a light tan head. Aroma is cocoa, banana, and wood, taste is more pronounced oak and chocolate with a smooth, bittersweet finish. The alcohol is very well camoflauged. Overall a spectacular ale.

Aroma: Smelling of sherry, dried banana, chocolate, vanilla and oak.
Appearance: A dark chestnut colored beer. A off-white head with good lacing and good curtains.
Taste: Tasting caramel, sherry, chocolate and vanilla.
Palate: Low carbonation, a soft and oily texture. A big body.
Overall: A very good beer. Balance and fortitude.
Note: Bottle 750 ml at home. Reviewed 2014-12-25.

This was really quite excellent. An even more pronounced flavor than the gulden draak 9000 I had just before this. Sweet but at the right level to hide the alcohol.

I had this while in Bruges recently . . . at Cambrinus. I would put this up there with Rochefort 10 which I’ve always liked better than Westvleteren XII and St Bernardus Abt 12. It does not give off the notion of being 11% as it is well masked. It is fruity and sort of earthy, reminding me of a strong dubbel.

Pours a very dark bronze brown with a large creamy tan head. The aroma is slightly hoppy with some sweetness and fruit. Taste is sweet & creamy with some caramel and spice, with bitterness in the background and a light warming from the alcohol. Very smooth body with high drinkability and a very low alcohol presence. This beer has a long shelf life and I look forward to trying it months or even a year or two from now. Great quad!
