COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Caramel, toffee, bread, and dark fruit in the aroma. Flavor starts sweet and bready, with some fruit and spice. Finish is more bitter than I expected, with lots of drying alcohol and more spice flavor. Like most quadrupels, this has lots and lots of flavor--a really nice cold night sipper.

33cl bottle from the Beerhive. Appearance - toffee brown with a red chink. Proportionate head. Nose - toffee and banana with a hint of nuts. Taste - big toffee then a dry biscuit note which goes on. Tobacco note to follow. Palate - rich in body with a big opulent rich texture. There’s an oily consistency. The finish is sweet but relative to the start and middle it’s dry. Overall - lovely big nightcap beer.

Bottle. Clear dark red pour with tenacious off white foam. Aroma is quite complex, rich malty notes (brown sugar, caramel), fruity, plums, molasses, blackberries, spice. Taste is sweet, quite nutty, lots of fruits (berries) with a sweet caramel finish, alcohol quite well hidden. Lingering spiciness. Palate is rich and creamy, with light prickly carbonation. Good stuff!

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2014 33cl in a Trappist glass. Pours a wonderful dark brown colour with a white head. Aroma is sweet and wonderful. The taste is toffee, caramel, malt and very (ginger)bready. Too sweet and sickly for the style and extremely susceptible to temperature.

330ml bottle from 1420, León.
In short: a boozy belgian quad.
Pours hazy dark copper-amber with frothy tan head, good head retention, some lacing. Roasty, liquor, caramel, nuts aromas. Medium body, viscous texture, average carbonation. Taste is sweet, liquor notes, caramel, roasted flavours, spicy, all among a nice alcoholic load. Despite this is quite well balanced. Very enjoyable.

Taste: Low/medium sweetness and bitterness, medium sourness. Palate: Light smooth texture, light airy body, prickly carbonation, dry abrupt malty fruity, spicy finish with a slight alcohol warmth. Comments: Lovely and glass lace.
