Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark color and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time.

It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

33 cl bottle@home in Trappist glass@approx 8 degrees C. Pours almost black, which turns dark red when you put it to a light., with a substantial beige head. Aroma of vanilla and caramel. Very stringent taste with roasted malt, liquirice and a distinct bitterness in the long aftertaste - bordering on grapefruit. High alcohol content asserts itself a little too much. This was a young example BBF June 2017 and I am sure that several years cellaring will improve this beer. Will try it. Oh, and almost an extra decimal for that golden half moon face on a black background on the cap... perhaps the best cap I have ever seen.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2015 2015/04/26 - Bottle at De Halve Maan brewery in Brugge. Pours a dark mahogany/amber colour with a soapy, khaki head that slowly reduces and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is dough, brown sugar, caramel, gingerbread, molasses, tobacco, pepper, dark fruits. Taste follows nose; sweet bread, molasses, dates and mildly toasted notes. Mouthfeel is thick and chewy with average, smooth carbonation and a semi sweet, slightly roasted and slightly boozy, warming finish. Very enjoyable. I will be aging this one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Thought the Straffe Hendrik Tripel was the best but this one is even better! Strong, sweet and spicy

Beautiful mahogany beer, with a head that is decent, but a bit thin. Amber Belgian malts with some clovey phenols and dark fruit aromas and flavor. Buzzy body accentuates the lovely flavors, and the alcohol is well ensconced in the beer. I had this after a Westvetleren 12 (2015), and this one actually stood up as the better beer, though the West definitely needed a couple more years to age.

Tap, 25 cl @ Brugs Bierfestival. Dark brown beer with a medium creamy beige head, perfectly tapped (!), nice lacing. Aroma is quite similar to the Straffe Hendrik Tripel: malty, with some hops and sweetness included, dark fruits are extra to the Quadrupel. The taste at first sight also: strong malty taste, light sweet beer, grassy finish of hops. But the further you drink, the more comes to the foreground: instead of malts you discover these are roasted malts, a caramel taste on the background, dark fruits are also coming to the foreground. The Quadrupel has the same specific taste as the Tripel (or you are fan who likes this taste or you aren’t), but has so much more to serve you. Excellent choice, this quadrupel! (btw: excellent beer for my 300th rating!)

Bottle, bought @ Vinens Verden, Odense.
A beautiful deep ruby red colour with a fine, staying, frothy, off-white head on top. Aroma has prunes, raisins, some mild cherries, caramel malts, vinious, mild oranges, slight coriander and plums. Highish carbonation, fine creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is very nice, good caramel base, light biscuit, some coriander. Quite vinious with plums, raisins and a mild roasted note. Very good, even if the alcohol is a bit too apparent.

Bottle at Christian Firtal. Deep ruby with a lasting off-white head. Inviting fruity aroma with plums, dates, raisins and port wine, with an underlying spicy note. Sweetish flavour with equal parts dried fruit, caramel, alcohol heat and spice (anise, licorice, coriander notes). The alcohol is notable and rather hot, but reasonably well integrated
