A tender , yet intense aroma. An extraordinary taste sensation, bitter from the hops with a small amount of sweetness on the tongue. In one sentence: ’A taste sensation, from the beginning till the end!’

Blond to orange color, big white head. Aroma of belgian yeast, banana, apricot, orange, alcohol. Taste is bitter with a light sourness, lively carbonation. Notes of ripe banana, and apricot, bitter and alcoholic finish. A very good triple!

On draft at a cafe by the windmill on the outskirts of Brugge. Beautiful hazy gold with a massively full white head that billows. Aroma is musty and cracker malt. Taste is pleasant with Belgian yeast dominating and a bone dry finish.

Bottle, 11.2 oz. Nose is very sweet, lemony citric pale malt in small measure with medium vanilla and very strong honey. Lightly spicy. Pours hazy golden, lacing with a huuge rocky beige head, careful going there. Taste is much the same, spicy golden malt with light alcohol warmth, big honey, fullish body with a small hole in the center. More than just a serviceable tripel.

New, tripel version of the old Straffe Hendrik Blond, the brand name of which was bought from Moortgat (which acquired it through Riva’s bankruptcy) by De Halve Maan in 2008. They radically changed the recipe, made a tripel out of it and this is the result. Cream white, thick, regular head leaving pretty lacing on the edge of the glass; colour a warm yellowish peach blonde, misty. Aroma of sweetish grains, white bread, soap, green apple, freshly grated ginger, gooseberry, fresh orange peel, unripe apricots, gin, grass, fennel seed. Taste kicks off with a fresh fruitiness and sharpish citrus peel tang, elegant though, on a smooth and surprisingly light, but agreeable pale, sweetish maltiness; spicy notes kick in, drying the palate and paving the way for a long, dry finish of both spicy, leafy hop bitterness and warming, tequila-like alcohol flirting with astringency. In all, a fine tripel, more than decent and definitely an improvement compared with its (much less strong) Riva predecessor.

Bottle from Mitra Bunnik, BB 07-02-2017, large sample, served in a trappist chalice. Almost clear golden to orange color, huge rocky off-white head. Aroma is spicy, flowery, noble grassy and spicy hops, slight grainy malt. Bit sweet taste, soft to medium bitterness, some metallic note familiar to the style and yeast. High carbonation, thin body. Quite dry. Quite typical tripel / belgian strong blonde.
