COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unobtanium is a barrel-aged English-style Old Ale that ages for six months in a bourbon barrel, soaking up all sorts of amazing whiskey character as well as hints of oak and vanilla. The name was taken from an old aerospace/engineering term for a specific material or object (often imaginary, impossible or highly improbable to obtain) needed to complete any given project. And, before you ask, we did not take the name from the elusive metal in Avatar. James Cameron reportedly named the substance as an inside joke to his fellow techie/gear-heads. Our version is much tastier, though.

Bottle shared at the MDBG tasting 4/4/16. Dark brown, no head. Aroma of grapes, caramel, raisin, chocolate. The taste is grapes, toffee, toasted malt. Medium bodied, mild booze.

650ml bottle. Dark brown with small tan head. Aroma of raisin malt and booze. Taste is chocolate, cola, raisin, toffee. Thick and chewy texture. Not too sweet. The aroma was pretty light but I quite enjoyed the taste of this one.

Pours a dark reddish brown color. Aromas of wood, dark fruit, and some sweetness. Flavors of whiskey?, caramel, and some faint hops.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2016 Shared bomber bottle. Lovely red-brown body with a very good head. Lightly sweet with lots caramel and toffee. This is a bit boozy, mainly in the aroma, and it has pronounced bourbon barrel effects in the flavor. Still, excellent whisky barrel effects. Overall: easily the best beer Iíve had from this brewer, and one of the best old ales Iíve ever had.

Bottle. Brown pour with an off white head. Chocolate and caramel malt bouquet. The taste follows suit. Oak, vanilla, and cola lowlights. Good body and mouthfeel.

650 mL bottle poured into a wine glass. Deep amber body with a medium khaki head. Nose is dark fruits and booze. Bourbon. Tastes really sweet. Brighter fruits, but still fruity. Bourbon in the back end. Heavy sugars in this one. Well carbonated and very sweet. Way too sweet for me.

Bottle. Pours a deep amber with an off-white head. Aroma and flavor are very malty, lots of caramel, some earthy hops, some oak, a bit of smoke. Almost a doppelbock quality to it. Thick palate, low carbonation. Lots of alcohol noticeable. Tasty.

Sampled at cottage hill. Quite nice but split a bomber with friends. Strong rich and bourbon dominated. A sipper.

It has more quad characteristics than the standard old ale flavors. The whiskey barrel is present but not overpowering. I get a lot of dark fruits, vanilla, whiskey and a tad bit of sherry like oxidation. I prefer the illudium cognac barrel version better, had much more barrel and much more sherry like notes and was much thicker. But overall both are excellent beers, they stack up with some of the best barrel aged old ales out there

Bottle from Hop City Birmingham. Pours a dark brown color with lots of bubbles but not much of a head. Sweet aroma like dark brown sugar and honey but some lurking umami notes too plus a nice dose of yeast.. Bold flavor with dark molasses and some burnt toffee. Really nice vanilla and oak tannins that tighten the finish. No hint at all that this is almost 12%. Mighty tasty.
