Unobtanium is a barrel-aged English-style Old Ale that ages for six months in a bourbon barrel, soaking up all sorts of amazing whiskey character as well as hints of oak and vanilla. The name was taken from an old aerospace/engineering term for a specific material or object (often imaginary, impossible or highly improbable to obtain) needed to complete any given project. And, before you ask, we did not take the name from the elusive metal in Avatar. James Cameron reportedly named the substance as an inside joke to his fellow techie/gear-heads. Our version is much tastier, though.

Rcvd in trade. The appearance has a dark brown close to black colored body with a slim half fingered white foamy head that dies within twenty seconds. There’s not much lacing but what there is tries to coat the glass but slides fairly quickly. The smell has some dark rich malts, toffee and coffee with a large amount of barrel aged bourbon-ness. Once it warms a bit I do start to get some woodiness. The taste is kinda sweet to woody almost a rich sort of maltiness that tries to add a bitterness but doesn’t really cut it. The aftertaste is a pretty rich woody/maltiness with a dry lingering woody finish. The palate sits about a medium to heavy with a fairly low carbonation. There’s a decent sweet wet finish, sessionability - well, ok, not bad, I could see having several pints in a session. Overall, this is an old ale and you know what - though old ales aren’t my go to style, this one was very good.

Draft. Brown with thin tan head. Aroma of strong sweetness, caramelized sugar, and fruits. Medium/heavy body with a cloying heavy syrupyness, molasses, and a strong solvent alcohol finish.

Draft pours brown with red hues and an off white head. Aroma is dried fruit, cherry, a good bit of alcohol, caramel, and slight spices. Taste is belgian spices, fruit, caramel, and a strong solvent like alcohol burn. Sweet finish and medium body. Judging by other reviews, maybe I just got a bad batch. The Alcohol was too sharp.

Pours a mostly clear, amber-brown with a short, quickly dissipating brown-khaki head. Root beer hard candy and horehound hard candy aroma. There’s quite a bit of alcohol invading the olfactory. Sticky, mildly thick mouthfeel. Sweet nuttiness, brown hard candy, and ample alcohol. When the alcohol gets expressed, the flavor and experience become more like bourbon.

This Old Ale is "alive" with witch’s brew bubbles percolating in the glass to the very last drop. I have no problem with any aspect of this recipe, finished product or even the chemistry professor doing lab work label pic. I can’t fault it’s uniqueness like too many picky [thy ass] people out there. Maybe it matches my character: Strong, Rich, Bold, Radioactive.

1/29/14. Snow day! 22oz bottle from Beach’s in Fort Walton Beach. Dark amber pour with basically no head, barely a small khaki. Booze in the aroma, a touch of acetone, straight up whiskey, oxidation, sweet dark fruits, and maltiness. Rich sweet flavor up front, some whiskey, a bit of sourness, actually, with caramel and fruitiness, oxidation. Meh.

Tawny colored pour. Small off-white head. Aroma of hops and malt. Fruity malt flavor. Not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap. Nearly opaque deep brown with a lasting ring of bubbles. Aromas of cola, oak, vanilla, chocolate and whiskey. Taste has vanilla, oak, whiskey and peppery green herb. Heavy body is thinned by the slightly overpowering whiskey and abv presence. Has a nice balance and smooth, medium carbonation.

22oz bottle. Poured a deep amber color with an off white head. Caramel, fruity, very light whiskey, some wood, and vanilla.
