COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unobtanium is a barrel-aged English-style Old Ale that ages for six months in a bourbon barrel, soaking up all sorts of amazing whiskey character as well as hints of oak and vanilla. The name was taken from an old aerospace/engineering term for a specific material or object (often imaginary, impossible or highly improbable to obtain) needed to complete any given project. And, before you ask, we did not take the name from the elusive metal in Avatar. James Cameron reportedly named the substance as an inside joke to his fellow techie/gear-heads. Our version is much tastier, though.

Flavors of brown sugar, bourbon, dark fruit, figs, raisins, and caramel. Quite a full mouthfeel, yet very smooth, and very little hint of hops.

Bottled. Bourbon is a particular weakness, so take that into consideration, because this is like someone married Theakston’s Old Peculiar and a fine brown KY liquid. Pours a cola brown with a small head. Bourbon in the aroma , along with oak and vanilla, and flavor following along beside.

Bottle shared by brew3crew. Poured hazy brown color with an average frothy white head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate toasted sweet malt and bourbon wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced bourbon sweet flavor with a medium to heavy complex sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex barrel version.

From a plastic mini-growler, thanks to brew3crew for sharing. Mildly hazy brown color. Not really any head. Bubbles around the edge of the surface, that’s it. Woody, vanilla, bourbon-y nose. Some earthy, herbal, tobacco notes. Some light dark fruit. Bigger body, pretty much flat no carbonation. Sweeter taste, some chocolate in the flavor. Light molasses, caramel malts, little roast. Nice, rich flavor. Good stuff!

Growler to snifter (thanks brew3crew). Looks solid; caramel with little carbonation or lacing. Smells and tastes solid; sweet and boozy. Average on the palate. Solid, but would love to try it fresher (the growler was a couple of months old).

Tasted on 2/5/13 from a 22oz bomber bottle purchased at Grand Cru. Pours a very deep, dark brown with an average tan head that slowly recedes to average lace. The nose is full of molasses, dark raisins, port wine, dark fig, dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee, caramel, and just a touch of banana. The flavor is the same, dominated by caramel, toffee, caramelized fig, raisin, chocolate, coconut, and vanilla. The body is full with just lighter than average, and very smooth carbonation, and a long toffee, caramel, fig, raisin, and vanilla finish.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2013 Damn fine brew. Hint of bourbon and oak. Slight vanilla. Love bourbon barrel strong ales so this is right up my alley. Very impressed with the Straight to Ale brews.

Pours a thick dark brown. Syrupy almost with a thin head. Nose is full of bourbon. Lots of bourbon and alcohol. Only ok.

Tap growler in plastic from the wagon wheel - pours cola with a thin white head. Aroma is bourbon and cola. Taste is sweet with mild booziness. Palate is sticky with a touch of alcohol burn as it warms. Overall, solid brew.

Draft from Wagon Wheel Liquors. Pours brown with almost no head. Fairly big bourbon notes on the nose. Pretty boozy on the tongue with a lot of whiskey as well. Finish lingers a bit.
