3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz. bottle shared by brew3crew. Thanks again, Jason! Pours a dark amber color with a small beige head. Notes of caramel, vanilla, boozy cake, molasses, dark dried fruits (dates, figs), earth, and some faint spicy and tangy notes. Medium-bodied, with a chewy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Good, sweet old ale.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
24-Aug-13 (22-oz bottle: Shared by KingG, thanks Geoi!)
This barrel-aged beer pours a hazy, medium-brown body with a quarter-inch, tan head that settles fairly quickly to a thin ring and swirly sheet. The nose is obviously bourbony and oaky, with sweet, caramely, maple-like malty aromas, lots of sweet, dried fruit like raisin, fig, and apricot, and some green character from the oak. On the palate, again, the bourbon barrel aging really comes out, but it’s not boozy, but rather more toward coconut, vanilla, and oak. The malts are sweet and caramely with some light toastiness, and there’s a dried fruit character that suggests raisin, some prune, and apricot. The beer is full bodied and sweet, bordering on cloying, but I guess my mindset expects it to be pretty sweet anyway. Carbonation is light-medium, which fits fine. Overall, this is pretty solid. The bourbon barrel is pretty strong, but it’s not boozy, and I really appreciate that. My first beer from Alabama is a winner! Oh wait, I had some Red Mountain garbage back in the 90’s, but that was terrible, so it doesn’t count!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours clear deep mahogany with a small tan head that dissipates quickly but leaves some lacing. Aroma is carmal, toffee, bourbon, vanilla. Flavor is much the same plus some astringency and character from the wood. Medium sweet, little bitterness. A bit on the hot side on the finish. Tastes much more like a BA wee heavy than an old ale, but what the hey :)

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber. Poured clear, deeper amber with a short toasted beige head. The aroma picked up lots of sweet, warm dark fruits, molasses, and vanilla with accents of bourbon and another layer of fruit. The flavor found tangy fruit skins, oak, and bourbon with molasses and rich fruit meat behind.. lots more sugars and spicy boozage on the long, belly-warming finish. Heavier-bodied and a bit too sweet on the palate.. this was interesting and it warmed up the belly.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Flavors of brown sugar, bourbon, dark fruit, figs, raisins, and caramel. Quite a full mouthfeel, yet very smooth, and very little hint of hops.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled. Bourbon is a particular weakness, so take that into consideration, because this is like someone married Theakston’s Old Peculiar and a fine brown KY liquid. Pours a cola brown with a small head. Bourbon in the aroma , along with oak and vanilla, and flavor following along beside.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by brew3crew. Poured hazy brown color with an average frothy white head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate toasted sweet malt and bourbon wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced bourbon sweet flavor with a medium to heavy complex sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex barrel version.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
From a plastic mini-growler, thanks to brew3crew for sharing. Mildly hazy brown color. Not really any head. Bubbles around the edge of the surface, that’s it. Woody, vanilla, bourbon-y nose. Some earthy, herbal, tobacco notes. Some light dark fruit. Bigger body, pretty much flat no carbonation. Sweeter taste, some chocolate in the flavor. Light molasses, caramel malts, little roast. Nice, rich flavor. Good stuff!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Growler to snifter (thanks brew3crew). Looks solid; caramel with little carbonation or lacing. Smells and tastes solid; sweet and boozy. Average on the palate. Solid, but would love to try it fresher (the growler was a couple of months old).

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted on 2/5/13 from a 22oz bomber bottle purchased at Grand Cru. Pours a very deep, dark brown with an average tan head that slowly recedes to average lace. The nose is full of molasses, dark raisins, port wine, dark fig, dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee, caramel, and just a touch of banana. The flavor is the same, dominated by caramel, toffee, caramelized fig, raisin, chocolate, coconut, and vanilla. The body is full with just lighter than average, and very smooth carbonation, and a long toffee, caramel, fig, raisin, and vanilla finish.
