Unobtanium is a barrel-aged English-style Old Ale that ages for six months in a bourbon barrel, soaking up all sorts of amazing whiskey character as well as hints of oak and vanilla. The name was taken from an old aerospace/engineering term for a specific material or object (often imaginary, impossible or highly improbable to obtain) needed to complete any given project. And, before you ask, we did not take the name from the elusive metal in Avatar. James Cameron reportedly named the substance as an inside joke to his fellow techie/gear-heads. Our version is much tastier, though.

Bottle shared by brew3crew. Poured hazy brown color with an average frothy white head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate toasted sweet malt and bourbon wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy balanced bourbon sweet flavor with a medium to heavy complex sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex barrel version.

From a plastic mini-growler, thanks to brew3crew for sharing. Mildly hazy brown color. Not really any head. Bubbles around the edge of the surface, thatís it. Woody, vanilla, bourbon-y nose. Some earthy, herbal, tobacco notes. Some light dark fruit. Bigger body, pretty much flat no carbonation. Sweeter taste, some chocolate in the flavor. Light molasses, caramel malts, little roast. Nice, rich flavor. Good stuff!

Bomber. Poured clear, deeper amber with a short toasted beige head. The aroma picked up lots of sweet, warm dark fruits, molasses, and vanilla with accents of bourbon and another layer of fruit. The flavor found tangy fruit skins, oak, and bourbon with molasses and rich fruit meat behind.. lots more sugars and spicy boozage on the long, belly-warming finish. Heavier-bodied and a bit too sweet on the palate.. this was interesting and it warmed up the belly.

22 oz. bottle shared by brew3crew. Thanks again, Jason! Pours a dark amber color with a small beige head. Notes of caramel, vanilla, boozy cake, molasses, dark dried fruits (dates, figs), earth, and some faint spicy and tangy notes. Medium-bodied, with a chewy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Good, sweet old ale.

1/29/14. Snow day! 22oz bottle from Beachís in Fort Walton Beach. Dark amber pour with basically no head, barely a small khaki. Booze in the aroma, a touch of acetone, straight up whiskey, oxidation, sweet dark fruits, and maltiness. Rich sweet flavor up front, some whiskey, a bit of sourness, actually, with caramel and fruitiness, oxidation. Meh.
