COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Maimed in an accident that left him with a hunched back, Brother Joseph Zoettl worked in the St. Bernard Abbey power plant shoveling coal. In his spare time, Brother Joseph used found objects such as marbles and chunks of concrete and tile to build miniature shrines and buildings on the Abbey grounds. Over 40 years, he created 125 different models and replicas. Today, the Ave Maria Grotto covers three acres and is world-renowned as both a fun roadside attraction and an awe-inspiring collection of folk art. We have named our Belgian dubbel after Brother Joseph as a testament to his perseverance, his hard work, and his indomitable spirit. A full-flavored abbey-style ale with a complex taste and aroma, Brother Joseph’s Dubbel is filled with specialty malt and dark fruit character.

Tap. Pours mostly clear brown with creamy off-white head. Aroma is bready malts, light caramel, faint woody notes, and faint toast. Flavor is semisweet bready malt base, light Belgian yeast esters, light hop bitterness, and faint floral notes; dry finish. Medium body and carbonation. Can’t put my finger on it, but for an abbey style dubbel, this doesn’t do it for me.

A Belgian Dubbel should be a deep reddish, moderately strong, malty, complex ale. I found this to be light brown, lightly sour in aroma and taste, thin in body, lacking dark fruit flavors and complexity, which is the hallmark of this style. It’s not a bad beer, it is just not to style. More like a session sour. Maybe it was just the can I tried. I’ll try again in the future.

On tap at Cypress Street pub (ATL). Clear amber with a good durable head. Aroma seems off with too much barnyard but certainly fresh as it was just brought in from ’bam. Flavor: follows the aroma; poor with a variety of of-flavors. Overly sweet.

Pours a deep copper, with the aroma of grass and grain. The flavor has a horse blanket, leather quality and a slightly sour finish.

12 oz. can. Pours a mostly clear, ruby-tinged copper with a lasting disc of cream. Aroma of toffee, metallic raisin, bready yeast and a bit of spicy banana. Tastes of raisin, clove, merlot, brown sugar, wheat and a bit of dark, sourish cherry. Medium body has a bit too much fizz at times and shows a bit of booziness, but remains mostly smooth and drinkable with a nice balance. Not great, but not a bad take on the style. I’d like to see what a bit of cellaring does to this one.

Atlanta, Ga. - Hop City - 12 oz can. Dark copper pour, little to no head. Aroma of bubble gum and molasses. Flavor has some bubble gum, some maple syrup and a touch of molasses. Thick enough mouthfeel.

Reddish brown, loose white head. Smells like molasses, cola, caramel, and oak. Palate is not overly heavy, perhaps even a little fizzy, which I actually kind of like. Plenty of rich molasses, raisin, and caramel. Not bad at all...
