Maimed in an accident that left him with a hunched back, Brother Joseph Zoettl worked in the St. Bernard Abbey power plant shoveling coal. In his spare time, Brother Joseph used found objects such as marbles and chunks of concrete and tile to build miniature shrines and buildings on the Abbey grounds. Over 40 years, he created 125 different models and replicas. Today, the Ave Maria Grotto covers three acres and is world-renowned as both a fun roadside attraction and an awe-inspiring collection of folk art. We have named our Belgian dubbel after Brother Joseph as a testament to his perseverance, his hard work, and his indomitable spirit. A full-flavored abbey-style ale with a complex taste and aroma, Brother Joseph’s Dubbel is filled with specialty malt and dark fruit character.

Draft. Brown with a little off white head. Aroma of malts and light fruit sweetness. Light body with some malt sweetness upfront with slightly tart finish. Very little carbonation.

Poured into thin brown color with aromas of malt, cinnamon, light bread and some yeast. Flavors are caramel and malt with some light spice and cinnamon in the aftertaste.

Draught. This is a not so impressive dubbel - but its drinkable and its flaws are in what it lacks.

Pours a dark mahogany, somewhat translucent, with a decent light tan head. Malty aroma has hints of caramel and cinnamon. Flavor starts with a malty core and hangs caramel, cinnamon and horehound notes on that for a fairly bold taste. Texture is smooth and somewhat fizzy, nothing special but OK. Definitely worthy.

Draught at the Straight to Ale Taproom, Huntsville, AL. Clear mahogany colour with a small off-white head. The aroma is like mild fruit liqueur... Not bad. The flavour is also a bit like liqueur. Sweet, fruity, a bit boozy and strong. Warming. The aftertaste is also a bit boozy. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap. Pours a dark brown with a thin head. Sweet, malty aroma. Taste is fruity and malty and has a thin feel in the mouth. Not much carbonation but the taste was pretty good, though a tad bland for my taste.

Growler purchased from the brewer. Pours an amber brown with very little head, could’ve lost some carbonation in the growler because the pint that i bought had a largewhite head. White lacing around the glass. Very thin mouthfeel. Nose is candied sugar, dried fruits, a little funkiness. Taste is similar. Not my favorite of the style, but a very drinkable Belgian style dubbel.

Looks like a dubbel but doesn’t really taste like one. Still pretty good, though, with a nice sweet/sour balance.

Draft. Pours amber with an off white head. Grassy and spicy aroma with some light sweet malty notes. The flavor has toasted malts and spicy yeast, with some light caramel malty sweetness and light floral notes. Good stuff.

very interesting beer. Tangy, sour orange flavor with a bit of malt. Clear light amber color with a creamy thick head. Not at all what I expected from a dubbel, but very nice.
