Maimed in an accident that left him with a hunched back, Brother Joseph Zoettl worked in the St. Bernard Abbey power plant shoveling coal. In his spare time, Brother Joseph used found objects such as marbles and chunks of concrete and tile to build miniature shrines and buildings on the Abbey grounds. Over 40 years, he created 125 different models and replicas. Today, the Ave Maria Grotto covers three acres and is world-renowned as both a fun roadside attraction and an awe-inspiring collection of folk art. We have named our Belgian dubbel after Brother Joseph as a testament to his perseverance, his hard work, and his indomitable spirit. A full-flavored abbey-style ale with a complex taste and aroma, Brother Joseph’s Dubbel is filled with specialty malt and dark fruit character.

Draft. Brown with a little off white head. Aroma of malts and light fruit sweetness. Light body with some malt sweetness upfront with slightly tart finish. Very little carbonation.

Reddish brown, loose white head. Smells like molasses, cola, caramel, and oak. Palate is not overly heavy, perhaps even a little fizzy, which I actually kind of like. Plenty of rich molasses, raisin, and caramel. Not bad at all...

Can at the brewery. Pours clear copper brown with a fizzy white head. Tastes like light nuttyness, toasted malts, alcohol. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like light alcohol, roasted malts, and light nuttyness.

This is a very disappointing beer. Very vigorous pour gives less than one finger of head -- not much carbonation. Thin alcohol taste, but sweet. Reminds me of a Killians Red, and I never want to be reminded of a Killians Red. Their Monkeynaught IPA is very good, but this one falls flat on so many levels. At first I thought I had a bad batch, but similar reviews confirm that this one should have been scrapped at the brewery. That or they need to work on quality control.

Dark mahogany colored pour. Small off white head. Little bit of lacing. Big malt and dark fruit aroma. Taste is the same with some fig and raisin.

Poured into thin brown color with aromas of malt, cinnamon, light bread and some yeast. Flavors are caramel and malt with some light spice and cinnamon in the aftertaste.

Draught. This is a not so impressive dubbel - but its drinkable and its flaws are in what it lacks.

Pours a dark mahogany, somewhat translucent, with a decent light tan head. Malty aroma has hints of caramel and cinnamon. Flavor starts with a malty core and hangs caramel, cinnamon and horehound notes on that for a fairly bold taste. Texture is smooth and somewhat fizzy, nothing special but OK. Definitely worthy.

Draught at the Straight to Ale Taproom, Huntsville, AL. Clear mahogany colour with a small off-white head. The aroma is like mild fruit liqueur... Not bad. The flavour is also a bit like liqueur. Sweet, fruity, a bit boozy and strong. Warming. The aftertaste is also a bit boozy. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap. Pours a dark brown with a thin head. Sweet, malty aroma. Taste is fruity and malty and has a thin feel in the mouth. Not much carbonation but the taste was pretty good, though a tad bland for my taste.
