COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Unobtanium is a barrel-aged English-style Old Ale that ages for six months in a bourbon barrel, soaking up all sorts of amazing whiskey character as well as hints of oak and vanilla. The name was taken from an old aerospace/engineering term for a specific material or object (often imaginary, impossible or highly improbable to obtain) needed to complete any given project. And, before you ask, we did not take the name from the elusive metal in Avatar. James Cameron reportedly named the substance as an inside joke to his fellow techie/gear-heads. Our version is much tastier, though.

This beer is a great season with a great bourbon kick to too off the maltiness. A fine beer

This Old Ale is "alive" with witch’s brew bubbles percolating in the glass to the very last drop. I have no problem with any aspect of this recipe, finished product or even the chemistry professor doing lab work label pic. I can’t fault it’s uniqueness like too many picky [thy ass] people out there. Maybe it matches my character: Strong, Rich, Bold, Radioactive.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2013 Damn fine brew. Hint of bourbon and oak. Slight vanilla. Love bourbon barrel strong ales so this is right up my alley. Very impressed with the Straight to Ale brews.

Terrific stuff here. Growler from Liquor Express. Poured with very thin and small head. It’s a cloudy dark brown in the glass. Pretty carbonated for the style. Absolutely love the bourbon notes..much more of an aftertaste than an in your face bourbon flavor. Has a floral hint that really reminds me of some of the trappiste ales. Sweet but avoids being cloying and syrupy. This is my favorite Straight to Ale brew so far. Alcohol is present but given the ABV it doesn’t slap you in the face. This is the type of brew that could sneak up on you if you’re not careful.

Strong oak aroma with bourbon flavor. Sweet with strong bourbon flavor... actually is this an old ale? Just call a bourbon barrel mild. Taste like the great bourbon barrel stouts out there.. just not the color but every other part. Other state this is sweet... not this go round. Sweet bourbon perfection.... unobtanium... I can believe that name. If this is consistent to be like this... its amazing! btw thin head... poured at brewery

22oz bottle, pours dark brown with a small tan head that quickly disappears. Nose is caramel, oak, vanilla, alcohol...lots of big aromas here! Taste is very rich and boozy! Wow! Great beer, I would love to taste one with a little age. This is a very big and complex beer.

Draft sample at the 2nd Annual Rocket City Brewfest. Brown with a thin off-white head that settles to a ring. Sweet bourbon malt aroma. The flavor found brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, and bourdon. Medium body with a sweet warming aftertaste.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2012 Draft. Pours a deep amber with an off-white head. Aroma and flavor are very malty, lots of caramel, some earthy hops, some oak, a bit of smoke. Almost a doppelbock quality to it. Thick palate, low carbonation. Very tasty. Would definitely drink this one again. .... Sampled again at Magic City Brewfest. Delicious. Reminded me again of a doppelbock, and I liked this much better than StA’s actual doppelbock.

Rcvd in trade. The appearance has a dark brown close to black colored body with a slim half fingered white foamy head that dies within twenty seconds. There’s not much lacing but what there is tries to coat the glass but slides fairly quickly. The smell has some dark rich malts, toffee and coffee with a large amount of barrel aged bourbon-ness. Once it warms a bit I do start to get some woodiness. The taste is kinda sweet to woody almost a rich sort of maltiness that tries to add a bitterness but doesn’t really cut it. The aftertaste is a pretty rich woody/maltiness with a dry lingering woody finish. The palate sits about a medium to heavy with a fairly low carbonation. There’s a decent sweet wet finish, sessionability - well, ok, not bad, I could see having several pints in a session. Overall, this is an old ale and you know what - though old ales aren’t my go to style, this one was very good.

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2013 Sweet smell of malt, caramel, and salt. Very sweet, caramel, like a fresh Thomas hardy.
