Second Sleep Russian Imperial Stout is a deep, dark, velvety ale brewed using eight types of malt then fortified and balanced with copious amounts of molasses. Roasted notes abound. Enjoy it now or lay it down for several years.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours very dark brown/black with a slight, transient tan head. Aroma is sort of smoky treacle. Full bodied. No smoke, but lots of treacle. Lots of near burnt malt. It’s quite smooth, nearly silky. No heat. The treacle level may account for the disparities in ratings. Finishes treacle, but not incredibly sweet. Either the scorched malt or the hop? is adding enough bitter to arguably balance.

Bottle. Pours with a near black hued body and a large brown head. Aromas are of molasses, milk chocolate, burnt candy, very estery. Dark fruit, floral hops and bakers chocolate. Flavors are quite metallic and burnt. Molasses, rough roast, acrid. Very harsh. Burnt and astringent, ashy. Over use of dark molasses (I have done it at home). Bitter. Very messy. Fuller carbonation, off-dry.

Bottle from the brewery. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Smoke, roasted malt, and some chlorine. Ashy, a bit of chocolate, plastic, and water. The flavor is really off-putting as well. Smoke, plastic, roasted malt, and chlorine. Some char, ash, and dark chocolate. A bit acidic, watery, and herbal.

Pitch black appearance, light head, not super strong coffee smell as you would suspect, you can smell the alcohol, the chocolate notes are note super strong either, little vanilla. The taste however, very super strong coffee taste which is a shock, bitter sweet chocolate, almost a milky chocolate, vegetable oil feel, great aftertaste, the ABV gets it right, that strong alcohol content gives it that sweetness at the end. Great stout! This an awesome one. Have a feeling it might taste even better aged.

Bottle. Pours clear black with a medium frothy light tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is cookie, chocolate, and roast malt with prune and figs, herbal hops. Flavor is malt dominant with dark fruity esters, light hops and bitterness and a dry finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
