COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
What do you get when you throw the wrong malt into a batch of Belgian Wheat? A happy mistake! That’s how Strange Brewer Tim Myers stumbled across this Tasting Room favorite. Rather than dump the batch, Tim decided to create the world’s first Belgian Wheat Stout. Gobs of Carafa III give this Belgian Wheat a delicious roastiness. Montmorency Tart Cherries give it a tart snap that will pucker you silly.

[draft] Dark, inky brown pour. A thin head even for a stout - more so given wheat blend. Really surprising aroma - burnt pie crust notes, tart cherry, and roasty malt. Tastes of tart cherry and dark chocolate. Nice mouthfeel with some roundness. Best beer I had at the tasting room that day, and worth a visit to try.

Wow - what a pleasant surprise and a wonderful mistake! Haven’t enjoyed a beer this much in a while. Pours black with deep brown highlights. Pie cherry and pie crust nose. Taste follows nose with just hints of baking spice and a good dose of chocolate. Great balance with a nice tartness from the cherry.

Sampled at Brewers Rendezvous 7/09/11. Pours a thin beige head, over a slightly hazy, dark brown (SRM 35) body....nose is cherry, coffee, chocolate....taste is chocolate cherry, slight sensation of sweetness, finishing with a sharp sour tartness....mouth feel medium, carbonation medium. This is an interesting combination of aromas and flavors with the heavy roasted malts being balanced back by the cherries. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

On tap at the brewery, sadly this was probably my least favorite of their offerings. Pours with a hazed deep brown with red highlights. Tan head atop. Aromas of cherry, acetaldehyde, sweet, cinnamon, floral, vanilla. Flavors are sticky sweet, juicy, spicy, pie cherry. Grainy and a bit musty. Mild carbonation with a strong lingering sweetness.

Tap. Pours dark brown with a large, frothy tan head, medium retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is cherry, chocolate malt, and no hops. Flavor is cherry, dark malts and a dry finish. Light body, low warmth, medium carbonation.

On tap at strange brewing, poured dark black with off white almost has a hint of pink in there, mostly tan head. Aroma has notes of slight sour cherry, toffee, chocolate, some other slightly odd fruity notes from the wheat with some roast as well. Taste is some sour cherry and slight pear notes, going into toffee, chocolate and coffee, finishing slightly sweet and also a bit bitter.

Poured a nice black color with a small, creamy light brown head. Aromas of roast, light chocolate and just a hint of pie cherries. On the palate, this one was thin and light bodied, with just the barest suggestion of cherries. Kind of a disappointment.

Crushed at GABF ’10. It’s aight. Dark but thin pour. Tart, sour cherries on the nose and the flavor. Little too sour for a non-sour brew, and quite watery.
