VeloVampire (375), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 31, 2008 On tap at the Magpie as "Sex Panther Ale" - yowza!!! I asked the bartender who made it and what style it was and he said that it was a new offering from Stratford and was their "common ale", so I’m guessing this is the same beer as the one listed here. Anyway, on to the beer - came a clear auburn with a good white head that left nice lace. Subtle aroma, but a mix of ale fruitiness and some of that crispness of Stratford’s Bohemian lager. Flavour is quite delicious and would certainly make an excellent session beer. Again there is a mix of styles here, and it seemed to me to have a perfect silky smooth balance of an ale and a lager. Sweetly malty and grainy up front and with a pleasant mineral fruitiness in the middle and a mild bitter finish. Stylistic adherence aside, this is a wonderful beer, and Stratford has proven itself AGAIN (after their Bohemian lager) that they are not a brewery content to produce one fairly standard pilsner. Kudos to that.
mabel (1246), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 15, 2008 [1243-20080401] Tap. Mild spiced grains aroma has a bit of leafy pine needles. Clear, orange amber body with a long-lasting creamy white head and thick white lacing. Slightly burnt toast charcoal malt flavour is lightly spiced throughout with a hint of evergreen. Medium-full body is a little rough. Average.
(@ Volo; Toronto, ON) Beer Snob (344), Ontario, Canada Jun 3, 2008 Served at the perfect temperature out front at Smokeless Joe’s on the first hot night of the year... talk about an advantage.
Fairly creamy head on a copper ale with a decent amount of carbonation.
Nice hop tang with a bit of toffee sweetness.
Very nice. tupalev (2267), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 26, 2008 On tap at Volo. Amber, decent sized white head. Mild aroma - malt, grain, some faint hops and sweetness. Taste is very refreshing and good - toasty malt, some faint hops, and grain. A solid session beer and way fresher (and similar to the Anchor Steam we get here. Thanks Stratford for adding something unique to the Ontario beer landscape! It may not be in your face or anything like that but it is well done and good. blankboy (2499), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 11, 2008 Draught at Volo. Pours a clear amber with a lasting creamy white head -- looks good. Very mild aroma of caramel malt, light toastiness and toffee. Flavour of slightly toasty malt, light hops, grain and caramel. Decent light bitter finish. Medium bodied. It’s O.K., it’s somewhat simple but there’s nothing bad about it. Sammy (2969), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 11, 2008 Ah! make it or break it’s 10th-make it!On-tap in secret stash at The Magpie. Two pints and a sample. The best was, unusually, the colder serving. The least, the room temperature. Pale coloured with some white head, and observable etchings of lace. Hoppy aroma (in the cold). Creamy mouthfeel (when colder) that drinks really well. Overall a pilsner. The afterbite doesn’t hit metallic, but it is the least of a pleasant quaff when warmer. A good one, and surprising breakthrough for the brewery.
