1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 27 October. Poured a clear copper colour with a rocky off white head. Aroma of straw, tinned fruit and a slight medicinal note. Bitter fruit flavours with caramel and hay in the mix, but itís all rather off balance. Finish is astringent bitterness with fruit rind and spruce. Not to my liking at all.

The Playhouse, Spoons. Cask. Clear amber beer with a tidy pale cream coloured head. Palate is smooth and semi dry. Tangy ripe orange, semi sweet. Smooth creamy malt with a light floral touch. Whispers of tropical fruits and smoke. Finishes semi dry. Complex and quite interesting.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Reddish chestnut with a ring of cream head; lacking in aroma; the body is grainy and thin, with a caramel taste; then a dry finish. A very basic, and unattractive, bitter.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Hand-pulled pint in The Briar Rose (Spoons), Birmingham on 30th Oct 2013.
More amber than red, even though the pump-clip stated íRed Aleí, with a white, lasting head.
Pleasant enough blend of flavours, mild citrus nose with malty overtones: taste is 50-50 with the hops and malts vieing for position, with neither winning the battle.
Medium bodied and very drinkable: but Iím on a mission, so only one of these today.

1.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 4/20
500 ml bottle. Reddish amber with a fast disappearing off-white head. Aroma is light malt and caramel with a hint of fruit. Flavor is also light malty, some caramel and an unpleasant harsh bitterness. One dimensional and in poor condition.
Getting more and more convinced that British bitters is meant to be served from tap at the pub, at least almost every beer from Strathaven seems to be in a bad condition when hitting the shelves in Norway. Normally Iím not complaining above the price for an import beer either, and of course I will not let the price impact my rating, but itís anyway ridiculous to pay about £7 for a bottle of British bitter in poor condition.
