1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Bottle. Pours amber thin off-white head. Aroma of bread, not much going on. Mild sweet taste. Medium-thin body, highly carbonated, bitter finish. Overall did not enjoy at all.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottle from the four type sampler case. Lots of yellow and orange hues on the pour with a few pleasant aromas. A little weak on flavor, perhaps from being reminiscent of prohibition days. Not your typical lager.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
On tap at The Knick. Mild beany noble hop aroma with a little corn sweetness and carbonic gaseousness. Rich amber clear with thin white head. Medium body with medium carbonation. Mild amber lager with mellow sweetness and moderately assertive bitterness, hint of nutty astringency. Finish is medium bitter with fairly clean after. Muted malty-corn sweet notes. Kinda like a richer Yuengling lager.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 ounce bottle thanks to cheap. Pours a dark copper color with a large white head. A light nose of Pils malt and honey. Crisp very sweet malt profile, sweeter than usual Pilsners and darker, some caramel and toffee. Low hop profile. Light bitterness trying to get in during the finish. An odd brew, but good. Very drinkable.

1.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20
A rare beer. From a bottle, directly. Not a pilsner, probably a heller er something like that, not a pilsner. Yes, a little sweet on the uptake, almost cloying at times. Certainly nit a pilsner. Finish is a little difficult at times. Not impressed. Way too much personality. Some co2 in there but just barely leads to a mouth coating experience.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
I think I picked this bottle up at Al’s and I wish I had some more of it. The 1872 is an offshoot of an anniversary style beer concocted earlier in the year. A burnished gold in the glass is topped off by a nice head that ringed out relatively soon. The aroma is nice but not assertive. I really liked the flavor of this one, harkening back to an earlier era of fuller beers; maybe with a bit more zip. It’s a smooth drinking beer with good conditioning. There’s a lingering finish that’s a bit effervescent and bitter that adds some real refreshment. I think this is a really good effort on Vince Assetta’s part along with Brewers Ray Frank and Dave Baumgratz. Great job, guys!

2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
A little darker and maltier than the regular straub beer and it doesn’t do it too many favors. This is the special anniversary release.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
on tap at Gene’s Place in Oakland (Pittsburgh, PA). I couldn’t tell much difference between the brew at the Straub Lager. But since I like the Straub lager, this one was just fine.
