3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Just stumbled across this on Groundhog Day. Clear deep amber with a medium head that quickly faded to fine lacing. The hop aroma, probably Saaz, lingered nicely. A bit of toffee flavor balanced the hops and finished dry and bitter. Not a bad groundhog nog.

Tap at the brewery. Groundhog beer is solid every year. Malty sweet aroma and a good malty brown sugar flavor. Not the best beer in the world, but not bad either.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2014 12 oz bottle from Grant Bar in Millvale, PA. Pours with a nice head and caramel aromas. Has a nice crisp and creamy taste. A slight hoppiness is found on the nose. A nice addition to the Straub family.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle from Capone’s. Pours dark brown, looking deep coppery through direct light. The head is khaki and minimal. Nose is earthy malt, brown sugar, nuts, and a whiff of vinyl. Tastes earthy, with notes of nuts, brown sugar, some lactic tartness. Finishes medium in palate heft. Mediocre.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
12 ounce bottle. Mahogany brown color with red highlights. Brief beige head disappears quickly. Faint roasted malt nose. Cloying burnt malt flavor has little complexity or body. More burnt maltiness. Overall, somewhat disappointing.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
My brother-in-law had one in hidden in his fridge. I just assumed it was the Straub light that they put out every year. But, this one was tweaked. Poured a dark red color with a brownish i inch head. Aroma was of toasted malts, some dark fruit. Flavor was light sweetness (maybe fruit flavors), light hoppy taste. Medium body. I liked the altbier.

12 ounce bottle from Barley and Hops. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. A sweet caramel and malty nose. A smooth nice flavor, very clean, sweet fruity malts, some yeast and light metallic finish. Good. Some bubblegum in the finish.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Pours a clear amber body with a small fizzy off-white head that fell to a thin covering. The nose is pretty decent, a light fruitiness over a toasted and slightly husky maltiness. A touch of hops round out the aroma. The flavor strikes me as a bit astringent right off the bat, and I think it detracts from the maltiness and light fruitiness that is there. I think it could benefit from a dose if hops that could add a little more zing to the flavor profile. The body is a bit on the watery side as well, I wish it were a bit more creamy and airy. Fizzy soft carbonation. I had bigger hopes for this one, there’s potential here, but the recipe needs a bit of a tweaking.
