Bottle - ’XB’. A cut above your average bitter with a lovely texture to it. Slightly grainy with a high bitterness. Copper golden with a small head.

Bottle from Booth’s- ’XB Best Bitter’. Clear bronze with a low, retreating white lid. For a BB pretty fruity; buttered orange peel, gentle hopcone, toffee and stone-soft mineral notes. Finishes dry with a trace of nuttiness. Caramel and straw aroma. Decent but ultimately another dreary, coppery bitter with a suggestion of twig I’m unlikely to ever drink again.
2.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 9/20 dogbomb (632) - ENGLAND - SEP 23, 2012
Bottle. Branded XB. Pours a rich honeygold with a steady white top. Nose is rich honey, a little light toffee. In the mouth, it;s quite sweet - but almost artificially so - like someone has popped a couple of sweeteners in. There’s a little fruitiness - lemon - in the taste. There’s also a malt dying to break out here, a slight toasty note. The palate leaves a horrid fake-sweet aftertaste in the mouth. Shame, lovely nose and lovely appearance - but that odd aspartame taste ruins it for me.

Cask conditioned handpump Criterion Leicester. A brown beer with a whitish head and lacing. Predominantly malty with yeasty notes too. On the sweet side and a touch phenolic. Has some interesting characteristics but is not memorable.

Cask-conditioned at the Bag ONails, Bristol 25/04/09. Copper coloured with a moderate white head. Red fruit aroma with a smidgin of caramel and grassy hops. Easy drinking, with plenty of doughy malts, some fruit esters and a sold, bitter finish. Good.
