Uncaged Stout
An easy drinking stout. Velvet on the palate with a complexity of fruity dark malt flavours to follow.

Bottle. Dark brown, average and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate, malty and sweetish aroma, light caramel, light roasted malt and coffee with faint licorice. Body is light to medium, malty and lightly sweetish - sweetish flavor, light caramel, light roasted malt and coffee/chocolate. Finish is short to average, malty and lightly sweetish, light - some roasted malt and light coffee, faint hoppyness. Watery stout with roastiness. Lacks character and body. Also could be drier. This one is more like small skinny cat.

500ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with average, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Roasty, minimally chocolately, dark malty aroma, a cautious touch of red berries. Taste is roasty dark malty, watery hints of chocolate, treacle and tar, increasing dark and caramel malty sweetness, almost toffee-like.

Poured deep dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of vanilla, caramel roast malt, fudge, dark fruit and chocolate. Medium body, flavour much as the aroma, a little light. Would like to try an Imperial version of this,

Purchased in the local corner shop. Slightly surprised to find a specialist beer there at all. The bottle proudly says ’Organic Stout’. I don’t know if this had been badly stored, but it came out of the bottle almost completely flat, with hardly any head at all. Black colour and some aromas of roasted malts. Pleasant enough taste with roasted malts, coffee and chocolate flavours. Some bitterness from the hops A little thin and with little complexity. The finish is not as well-rounded as, say, the Fuller’s London Porter, and actually has a slightly harsh edge to it. Not bad, but not great. I would like to try it again with a better sample.

blackisle (973) - IJburg, NETHERLANDS - MAY 26, 2014
Bottle 50cl (bough at organic shop). Opaque black with red hue, small tan head, vanishes after a while but fair lacing; aroma moderate roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, dough, brown sugar; mild bittersweet taste; medium body, thin creamy texture, soft carbonation; dry and mild bittersweet finish, some roastiness lingers on. Nice stout but lacks character.

Very barley nose with dark malt, smells very natural and grainy but none of the roastiness or chocolate / coffee I might expect, a bit ’green’. Black. A very natural, slightly liquorice, again ’green’ sort of flavour. Like freshly picked coffee unroasted. Quite sweet and syrupy in a way as well as being dry. Could be better but the simple / natural / ’organic’ flavours do work well.
