COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Vintage Ale 2011: Maris Otter barley was bred by Dr G.D.H. Bell in the mid 1950s to brew traditional cask conditioned ales and has become acknowledged as the finest brewing malt in the world. This characterful pale ale has been brewed using only 2011 vintage organic Maris Otter barley, and English organic First Gold hops.

Bottle at the Jim / John is back tasting, Den Haag, April 2016. Poured a hazy medium amber with a round white head. The aroma is yeast, apple. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light watery pretty nondeScript palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation.

UPDATED: APR 18, 2016 At Jim/John is back tasting. Clear amber with white head. Sweet malts, tea leaves, caramel. Light sweet, medium bitter. Medium body. Quite dry.

Bottle at THT. Clear dark golden with very short lasting head. Sweet bready notes with lots of toffee, cardboard, organic grain sugar substitute, soft herbal notes. Medium sweet and barely any bitterness. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle shared at the John/Jim tasting. Clear amber with a ring off white head. Aroma of malt, toffee, fudge and oak. Flavour is moderate sweet and light bitter. Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation.

2013 Version. Began to gush but not so fast that I couldn’t keep it under control. Pours golden amber with a slight haze. For some reason I was expecting darker. Very boozy nose, almost nail varnish remover like, ethyl acetate, which somewhat overpowers other characteristics. Possibly due to a long warm ferment. There are slight floral, soft fruit flavours making their way from behind that. On tasting, the most evident characteristic is a burning strength of both acidity and alcohol. There are flavours of wood but also out of place esters which are very slightly funky giving this beer a bad saison edge. There is even a vinegar like quality to the flavour. None of the flavours are bad as such, but they don’t all belong here together and the balance is all awry. A little oxidisation is acceptable in such a beer but the purpose of this beer, it seem to suggest, is show off primarily the malt. Instead, we have overpowering alcohol notes, funky esters which taste a lot like a minor infection and so the malt flavours are drowned out almost entirely.As I said, it’s not horrible, but it’s badly made and has no redeeming qualities apart from being drinkable in the most literal sense. The mouthfeel is pretty good, decent level of carbonation although a bit high really. I like this brewery and really respect their angle but this beer just hasn’t been executed properly at all.

Svesse (7725) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - APR 13, 2015
(Bottle) Hazy amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with dried apricots, orange peel, rye bread, honey and marmalade. Malty, fruity taste with orange peel, dried apricots, rye bread, heather honey, treacle toffee and a balanced citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty, interesting and quite complex. Quite nice.

Short beige head. Clear pale amber color. Pale malt and a tuch of caramell aroma . Mild hoppiness with a big pale malt taste, blended with crisp chrystal malts. Resembles a light barly wine.

Garrold (4018) - Sheffield, South Yorkshire, ENGLAND - JAN 20, 2015
Bottle. Archer Road Beer Stop, Sheffield. Colour of weak tea. Halo of dirty white bubbles. Looks ropey. Slightly astringent fruitiness. Light, toffee malts. Taste is sweet, but slightly tart. Syrupy palate. Manages to finish sweet, then dry, and light tart. Hard work.

Neorej80 (499) - - DEC 30, 2014
Slightly cloudy dark yellow colour. No head. Aroma of pears and nuts. Nice sweet oaky malt bitterness. Some hints of dadles and caramel! It also has is a bit of a syroplike structure. Interesting ale!
