COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Collaboration brew with Stillwater Artisanal Ales (USA). Crowned last week with a golden Award for Best newcomer in the world 2011.

This Belgian Strong Ale was married to a still young but powerful style, the Black IPA. Youíll discover a smooth chocolate like strong ale together with the high & bitter hop schedule of an IPA, and you get a great result...

Black body, light brown head. Aroma has chocolate, wine, dark fruits, medicinal hops. Woody and bourbon like notes. Sweet chocolate mocca flavour. Balanced aftertaste. Cinnamon. Velvety smooth and full.

Trappist1 (437) - Diest, BELGIUM - DEC 6, 2013
Dark, black with a thick brown head. Nose: soapy, coffee, malt, slightly roasted. Soapy part kills the beer. Taste: tobback, roasted, coffee, than something washy, soapy in the taste too (spices, mint??). Finish is bitter, but with a sweet touch, very alcoholic. This beer is a day job to get through. but too much, too strong for me.

Bottle at Molenhof. Fruity, spicy nose, cola, apple, licorice, cherry. Tastes like a big, strong, sweet Coke. Tangy fruit, super sweet, licorice, coffee. Not my thing really, but flavorful.

330 ml bottle. L 01/01/2011. BB 01/02/2016. From bierkompass.de.
Black colour with a small creamy tan head. Herbs, chocolate, sweetness, port wine, mild medicine and cookies in the aroma. The flavour is bitterness, whiskey (?), sweetness, alcohol, spices and malt. Not very balanced. Slightly disappointing after the delicious aroma.

Bottle from the Struise bottle shop in Brugge. Interesting beer, the taste and smell reminds me of coke or pepsi. It has a slight taste and smell of mint. Besides that some roasted malts. Fairly easy to drink despite the ABV. This bottle was bought in 2011 so it didnít have much of any hops left.

Powerful beer that can indeed best be described as a mixture between a strong Belgian dark beer and a black IPA. Nice as always.

Rating #500! Bottle shared with Mathieu87 at home. APPEARANCE: pitch black beer, nice stable beige head. NOSE: molasses, liquorice, somewhat smoked, gingerbread, salt. TASTE: liquorice, gingerbread, peppers, a very weird taste, mocha. Rather disappointed in this product from Struise...

Aroma is fairly spicy but also full of esters. Quite a bit of pepper and clove along with some sweet chocolate notes. Dark fruit with cherry, fig and prune. A hint of nuts. Pours a dark brown, almost black with a moderately thick dark tan head. Head recedes fairly quickly but stops leaving a film on top and along the edges. Light lacing with medium legs. Flavor starts with a slight sweetness but then the phenolic notes take over. Anise, pepper, clove and coriander. Moderately strong hop notes but the hops seem to be of a more noble variety than American. Moderate bitterness. Some burnt sugar, toffee and chocolate. Lighter esters in the flavor but still some cherry, fig and prune. Finish is fairly sweet with some alcohol spice to it and a touch of lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. A little sticky but not too bad. This is honestly a fairly interesting beer and better than I remember. The Belgian yeast works well with the noble hops and darker malts to make a very spicy beer. Good complex malt character with nice complimenting yeast notes. Sweet but not too overly sweet and the alcohol feels fairly clean.
