harrisoni (5129), Ashford, Kent, England Mar 28, 2007 75cl bottle BBE 02/07. This beer for me, sums up Ratebeer. In November 2005 I had to go to Antwerp for work at short notice. Knowing that I would be staying close to The Kulminator, I put a post up on the Forum on this site asking that if I only had 2-3 drinks in the pub, what should I have. Almost without exception, people suggested Struise Pannepot. Getting that kind of advice is indispensible. Pannepot is only one of three 5/5 scores I’ve given. Since then I’ve followed Struise with interest and I’ve had the good fortune to meet the guys behind the beers on a couple of occasions and I’m pleased to say that they are tremendous people. I picked this bottle up at the Low Countries RB Meeting in Antwerp last Sept. as part of the Kook farewell to Europe tour with Maeib and Duff, a great weekend which I owe to the Ratebeer site and people I’ve met through it. So thanks. The beer is very, very dark brown/red with thin lasting beige tan head. Lovely sour fruit aroma. Bit of wood too. Sour dark fruits of dark plum, black cherry and damson in mouth. But it’s not overly sour, it’s balanced by some fruity sweetness too. That sour aroma with dark fruits and touch of bitter choc is tremendous. The fruit in the mouth is just so pleasant, sour and sweet at the same time. Finish has drying sourness and more black cherry and damson. Just so well balanced, the sourness never over runs it. The wood adds to the whole experience. Overall it’s a great Flemish dark sour beer. The fruit is both balanced and outrageous at the same time.
muenster (335), Sevierville, Tennessee, USA Sep 6, 2008 Bottle, shared with NachlamSie. Pours murky brown with no head. Not a very attractive beer, but apparently it is intentional. Aroma is very potent. Lots of sour acidic notes, backed with a very earthy backbone, maybe like standing in a big vineyard. Flavor has a very unique sour profile, I’m getting a lot of grapes, vinegar, a bit of caramel, then it washes away with a very acidic cherry sourness. Very enjoyable. NachlamSie (1358), Tennessee, USA Sep 6, 2008 Bottle, big thanks to Muenster for this one. The pour is completely still, murky, and muddy brown. When I took a sniff, I vocalized my surprise. This stuff is powerfully aromatic in a very good way. Yeah, it’s cleanly sour, but not just that. Very rich, genuine vinous character is all over the place. A gentle floral backdrop highlights the grapey, winey notes and of course, highly tasteful suggestions of malt vinegar are up front. The mouthfeel is nice, the stillness works very well here. Lots of rich grape, oak, cherry, all strung together by beautiful sourness. I simply can’t get over the harmony and strength of everything. This is without a doubt my single most favorite soured beer I’ve ever had. BOLTZ7555 (463), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 4, 2008 Interesting beer...ugly as hell...but very complex and flavorful!!! This one pours a murky muddy river water with exactly 5 large bubbles for a head. The glass remains almost as clean as before the brew was poured...not a single spot of lacing is left. Aroma is pungent and exhibits red wine-like qualities. Grape, raisin, cherry skins, brown sugar, oak and balsamic all are evident in the nose. Flavor is sour but has a caramel undertone that makes this palatable. Enjoyed this one!!! ChristianScheffel (2104), Odense, Denmark Aug 29, 2008 Brown with a small off-white head. Fruity aroma with pineapple, and some malt, leather and brown sugar. Very sour flavour, mostly vinegar, with a cherry note. radiomgb (1761), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Aug 28, 2008 Deep brown with some rust in colour, thin off-white coloured head, good lacing. The aroma has some balsamic vinegar, cherries, some sweetness, sour and tart with a bit of wood. The flavour is more sweet than sour but it really works here, cherry tartness, light sourness and smooth all at once. Tart mouthfeel, medium body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes lingering, lots of cherries, some grape skins.
Wow, this was awesome, tart and sweet with perfect balance. I am very glad that I have more of this. Why mds called me "barn-tits" while drinking this I’ll never know.
