COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Due to its authenticity, Earthmonk received as little sugar as possible during bottle conditioning in order to preserve all original aromas and flavours. This beer comes with little carbonation and a mini head. Is best served at cellar temperature and poured generously, meaning from a hight of approximately 15 to 20 CM, in an upright standing tulip glass. A big bubbled head will quickly make place for the Earthmonk coming alive! Bottle-conditioned in 33cl (5000 btls.) and 75cl (1000 btls.). At Struise, we never retire beers. At ratebeer, Beers are retired when a new batch is not bottled within 12 months. As Earthmonk takes 18 months to age on oak... we have to be patient.

A very, very opaque brown color. I cannot see light through it, and it is still a bit turbid. I do get hints of light at the small of the glass and the top edges. There is a faint red tint to it. Flat, still pour. No head, even when forcing it. A very pungent acetobacter (vinegar) aroma. Very strong. There is a big malty aroma under this as well. Much like a big barleywine that may have gone bad from oxygen exposure. In this case it was intentional though. Leaves a caramel tint on the glass after taking a sip and the liquid falls back to its temporary residence. Some points it smells like a quad with barely any sourness, but that may be the vinegar smell saturating my senses until I clear them.

The taste is a very mixed bag of flavors. I get the sweet malt up front. Much like a quad in this regard. Then the sourness hits me. It isn’t overpowering like the smell would lead one to believe. It is subtle but in your face. An oxymoron of a presence. There is also a big alcohol presence in both taste and mouth feel. A slight bitterness makes its way into the mouth as well. It’s not the sour, it’s something else. Maybe some hops, as I get a bit of a vegetal taste also. But fairly subdued. A very earthy taste as well. Could be from the barrel, as is most of the oxygen characters I’m picking up. I’m digging it. It’s very complex. Like a sherry, but maltier. Fruity and sour, with sweetness mixed in. There is a burning in the throat after each swallow that is a combination of the vinegar and alcohol notes. Not over the top.

Awesome beer.

Vintage bottle from spacecoyote for free beer week many thanks! Pours flat reddish brown. Huge wonderful nose of toffee, dark fruit and vinegar. Tastes of cherry, plums, vinegar, red wine, toffee, tobacco, and citrus. Quite tart and semi syrupy. Lovely lingering sourness. Delicious.

Bottle vintage 2008. Muddy brown appearance with a tiny amout of head that vanishes super quick. Aroma is sour cherries, leather, oak, and red grapes. Taste is sour cherries, vinager, oak, and red wine. Finshes tart and acidic, with some malty sweeteness, minimal carbonation. Probably past it a bit, but for this being as old as it is it’s not half bad.

bottle shared by mathieuc, thanks bro. pours murky and dirty brown with a very small and dissapearing beige cap, no lacing. woody balsamic reduction, vinous character - lots of grapes and red fruitiness - spicy cranberries perhaps, controlled level of sweetness - burnt sugars and roasted candi, some beef stock, light to medium acidity - relatively complex with an acetic touch. low carbonation, medium body - oily; tart, sweetish and woodsy-spicy finish. enjoyed more than i thought i would considering the looks plus first whiff.

Bottle provided by Luk_, thanks a lot for the opportunity! Pours a dark red (a bit murky) with no head except for some large bubbles and no lacing. Nose is of vinegar, oxidation, cheese and light acetone. Taste is of sour red fruits, a bit of garbage, vinegar, nail polish and ends on surprisingly some light sweet notes. Body is medium, carbonation low to medium and mouthfeel a bit coating and oily. Overall not the complete disaster I was expecting but I can say with confidence that it was almost dead by now so drink yours quick. OK, better than Haandbakk.

2008 Vintage. Pours a deep mahogany umber color with three fingers of eggshell foam that settles to a fingers and lingers nicely. Nose is deep sharp and complex. Vinous acidity, cranberry, blueberry, cocoa, pine, caramel leather, mushroom. Layers nicely and begs to be sipped. Wow, the palate brings me from burgundy to austria and back to napa. Vinous Bomb ! Bright cherry acidity with nuances of herbal blueberry on the front... leading into a juicy cranberry boysenberry midpalate the rounds and softens with rich cocoa dusted blackberry and lingers with wet wood musty basement funk, composted leaves. Next level beer right here.
