COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Due to its authenticity, Earthmonk received as little sugar as possible during bottle conditioning in order to preserve all original aromas and flavours. This beer comes with little carbonation and a mini head. Is best served at cellar temperature and poured generously, meaning from a hight of approximately 15 to 20 CM, in an upright standing tulip glass. A big bubbled head will quickly make place for the Earthmonk coming alive! Bottle-conditioned in 33cl (5000 btls.) and 75cl (1000 btls.). At Struise, we never retire beers. At ratebeer, Beers are retired when a new batch is not bottled within 12 months. As Earthmonk takes 18 months to age on oak... we have to be patient.

A very, very opaque brown color. I cannot see light through it, and it is still a bit turbid. I do get hints of light at the small of the glass and the top edges. There is a faint red tint to it. Flat, still pour. No head, even when forcing it. A very pungent acetobacter (vinegar) aroma. Very strong. There is a big malty aroma under this as well. Much like a big barleywine that may have gone bad from oxygen exposure. In this case it was intentional though. Leaves a caramel tint on the glass after taking a sip and the liquid falls back to its temporary residence. Some points it smells like a quad with barely any sourness, but that may be the vinegar smell saturating my senses until I clear them.

The taste is a very mixed bag of flavors. I get the sweet malt up front. Much like a quad in this regard. Then the sourness hits me. It isn’t overpowering like the smell would lead one to believe. It is subtle but in your face. An oxymoron of a presence. There is also a big alcohol presence in both taste and mouth feel. A slight bitterness makes its way into the mouth as well. It’s not the sour, it’s something else. Maybe some hops, as I get a bit of a vegetal taste also. But fairly subdued. A very earthy taste as well. Could be from the barrel, as is most of the oxygen characters I’m picking up. I’m digging it. It’s very complex. Like a sherry, but maltier. Fruity and sour, with sweetness mixed in. There is a burning in the throat after each swallow that is a combination of the vinegar and alcohol notes. Not over the top.

Awesome beer.

2008 bottle in The Beer Temple, generously shared by Trevor, thanks! Dark brown color. No head. Aroma’s: sour, vinegar, lightly oxidized, raisins. Additionally some sweetness retronasal. Flavor is moderate to full sweet and moderate sour. Light bodied, perhaps because of the lack of carbonation. Flavors linger. Actually really nice, true Flemish.

750ml bottle from trade with fonefan. Thank you Jan! Brown muddy hazy color with small beige head that quickly disappears. Vinous aroma, wood, yeasty, dark tart fruity, light malty, caramel notes when it gets a little warmer. Sweet and acidic taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft to flat carbonation.

Bottle from JefVerstraete, thanks! Surprisingly malty nose, like pumpernikel with bread, vanilla and brown sugar. Also alcoholic. In contrast, due to the slightly vinegar-like acidity, the body does not come across as solid. The carbonation is almost none, while the coffee-infused finish is also alcoholic. This is a very strange flanders red, not really fruity while still decidedly vinous, in part reminiscent of home made wine with added sugar (hence the easily discernable boozy notes). Not sure what to think of this but I would lie if I wrote that I found it tasty.

Bottle at kulminator. Pours deep brown, nose is funky, toffee, balsamic, taste is chewy toffee, sweet, light funk, a bit past its best.

Bottle at Kulminator, finally caught it. Brown pour, small head. Aroma of red grape, oak and milk sour. Taste is long, weird and hard to pinpoint. With wine, vanilla, subtle wild sour oak. There’s a lot going on with this beer, strange and tasty.

Licorice and bourbon smell. Tastes like a heavy red wine. Low carbonation and medium body.

Many thanks to Rian for sharing this 2007 Vintage. Intense sourish woody nose. The beer starts nice earthy and sour. Hints of malty sweetness on a great sourish but still smooth body. Fresh, easy to drink though with a nice depth. Sourish-fresh, earth, dark cherries, no bitterness. Great long sourish earthy dark aftertaste. Great!

Drunk from a Reidal Vinum glass. in the bottle there is a relatively intense brown sugary quality with just a whiff of the ol’ sour. Headless in the glass though there are swirling flat one dimensional lacing dots on the surface which creates delicate swirling patterns. Dark chestnut brown with some red rusty highlights. Considering it has no head it looks pretty inviting. There is a slight vinuous quality and more intense brown sugary sweetness along with cherries surrounded by a golden hue. Some overly ripe apple in there too. No carbonation but smooth sleek and caressing in the mouth with some fine wafer like instensity on the way down. Much elegance for an 8% ABV beer. Beautifully molded together to form a seemless whole. the nose from the final drops just goes on and on and on and on and on. Glorious.

Vintage bottle from spacecoyote for free beer week many thanks! Pours flat reddish brown. Huge wonderful nose of toffee, dark fruit and vinegar. Tastes of cherry, plums, vinegar, red wine, toffee, tobacco, and citrus. Quite tart and semi syrupy. Lovely lingering sourness. Delicious.
