4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 sleestak (226) - Williamston, Michigan, USA - AUG 12, 2008
Bottle shared by masonjer. Poured black with a decent sized (for an imperial stout) chocolate brown head. Aroma was surprisingly fruity - dark cherries supported by roasted malt. Overall flavor is definitely closer to a quad than an impy, save the dark roast backbone. Loads of dark fruit and a distinct vinous character. Alcohol presence is subtle. Lots of carbonation and a lighter than anticipated mouthfeel. Despite the difficulties with classifying its style, it’s definitely a remarkable beer.

Bottle Deep black, clear body. Frothy brown head. Spare lace. Aroma of deep strong malts, cherry, white wine, apples, pear sirupe, smoke, ... Perfectly balanced aroma with an ok complexity. The aroma is not very complex, but the partial lack of complexity is made up by the balance. The aroma is not at all one dimensional on the malts as one would expect from an imperial stout. The flavour is moderately bitter, moderately sweet mainly of strong malts (but not overwhelming, the malts are more pronounced in the aroma and even in the aroma it is not that much for a stout). Quite fully bodied with a lot of carbonation. Good balance, but as the aroma, the flavour is not that complex. In the aroma the balance could make up for the lack of complexity, but in the flavour it doesn’t succeed fully, but certainly well enough. This is definitely a good stout, but maybe more like a quad since the malts are not dominating. A superb addition to the Belgian beer scene, let’s hope we can keep on getting this in Belgium.

Poured opaque black from the bottle. Nose is belgian yeast and fruit and a hint of roast. Taste is distant roast again, plum, raisin, wine character, with a nice round and balanced flavor. Didn’t taste hardly any alcohol. More belgian quad then stout to me. Kind of thin, but a really enjoyable flavor.

Batch 14 [imported by Shelton]-11.2 oz bottle-pours a foamy light brown head with trailing lace and black color. Aroma is dark fruit-plum/raisin, tart/sour, yeast, dark malt-ash. Taste is dark fruit-plum/raisin jumps out, then tart/sour, wood/smoky, dark malt-ash, yeast, slight hops. Complex, while not my style-enjoyable. Great drinkability, alcohol not overpowering. Full body. Thanks JWC215 for sharing.

Shared by yespr at the RBSG GT.Clear black brew. Thin on the palate but very complex. Like many complex brews, the first sip you get a sense that this is going to be something special. After the second, third sip you realize that you mighjt be on to something here. Fruit for sure, but only because all the other flavors, coffee and some chocolate have not drowned it out. Man, it amazes me that a beer can have so many diffent "tastes". Thanks to Yespr.

Dark, black colour. Has a lasting, beige head. Aroma is strong, notes of alcohol, fruit, wine, port. Flavor is excellent, coffee, dark bread, grain. Long duration. Full body. Soft carbonation. Warming alcohol. The 13% abv isn’t unpleasent, only strong.

A delicious and easy to drink impy. I would never have guessed this was 13%. Aroma was huge. Strong chocolate, dark fruit and roasted malt. Pour was a perfect black with a 2 finger tan head. Taste was great. Strong chocolate, plum and roasted malt with no alcohol burn. As it warms dark chocolate and bitter hops show their head. Very complex and drinkable.

Man, I forgot who brought this to the tasting at gumby’s, my bad. Dark, near black pour with sparse white head. Slight roast and licorice on the aroma, very little alcohol detected on the aroma. Roasty and bitter taste, slight spice, a mild cocoa-like presence on the back end. Pretty thin for 13% also. Pretty subtle, and that is itself isn’t bad, but I don’t see what the fuss is about with this one.

Black pour with big tan head that doesn’t move. Smell of espresso coffee, brown sugar, caramel. Flavor is huge of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, some fruit, even a little orange. Wow, one of the best. Bitter aftertaste, great lacing and very drinkable.
