Dec 7, 2008 Pours onyx black with a dense medium brown head. Robust aroma. I get some chocolate, coffee and creamer, some dark berries, and a bit of smoke. The flavor is a bit different. Kind of a fruity mocha with plenty of bitterness and alcohol. Silky, milky mouthfeel with plenty of carbonation. The finish is a bit bitter and hot. Still, this is a fine beer and is recommended.

Dec 6, 2008 Updated: Feb 24, 2009Rating #200!!! Bottle major thanks to Phil aka 502Flavors. Awesome pour, absolutely humongous, thick creamy coffee tan head, black body. Aroma is initially small amount of alcohol, then some nice floral hops. Also some fruity notes in there too. Flavor is exceedingly clean and simple at first. Bitter chocolate, dried dark fruits, some mocha and hops. Extremely smooth, silky and creamy on the palate. A very nice finish that is slightly bitter and a slightly noticeable touch of alcohol which doesn’t take away from the brew. This is an excellent beer for such a high ABV that masks its alcohol very well.

Dec 6, 2008 Brewed in Belgium. Pours a very dark brown-black color with a med-creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate coffee dark malts and a hint of alcohol. Taste is of rich chocolate molasses dark fruits hops and warming alcohol. Mouthfeel is creamy and think but not to heavy. There is a nice robust texture to this imperial that goes down very smooth. You dont even realize that there is 13% alcohol in this brew.

Dec 5, 2008 Bottle from Belgium. Thanks Chuck. Deep dark brown copper in color with a medium off white head that left a nice lacing on the glass. Roasty malty spicy aroma. Caramel dark fruity notes. Spicy caramel malty hoppy flavor. Roasty Chocolatety coffee vanilla notes. Full bodied. Finish is malty. Very drinkable. Nice.

Dec 5, 2008 Very dark brown liquid with a diminished head of chocolate colored bubbles. Nothing extraordinary about the looks. Roasted malt and spices in the scent. Aromas of coffee, cinnamon, prunes, dates, bourbon vanilla, and dark chocolate. Nice complex aroma. Lightly oily feel. Just a little zip from the alcohol and effervescence. Once again I am confronted by licorice, a long time foe. Licorice, grass and grains all mingle about in a dark malt stew. Some chocolate and fruit rise up briefly here and there. Still I am left with a very grainy linger. and a quite warm stomach - you tell the alcohol is there when tasting, but not a fault or too much in the taste. Some acidic black malt also found in the finish. For me just another strong stout that others seems to go agog about.

Dec 4, 2008 Updated: Mar 9, 2009Molasses pour, with an inch of a dense tan head that never fully dissipates. Aroma muted, some raisins, not a lot else. Much fuller in the flavor, big roast profile, raisins, milk chocolate, turning darker in the finish, smoky elements waft through the mouth long after the swallow. As it warms, becomes more hoppy, coniferous, chocolate develops more complexity. Thick and smooth like no other beer I had. Would rate 6 on the palate if I could.

Nov 30, 2008 Pours dark but not completely opaque with a thin head. Smells of dark fruit, molasses, maybe maple or hazelnut. Mouthfeel is soft and creamy but not that thick. Does linger for a while. Flavor is roasted malt and dark fruit; maybe a little spice of some sort. ABV is amazingly well hidden. Very smooth. I prefer stronger coffee and cocoa in RIS but this is definitely interesting.

Nov 29, 2008 Bottle at the European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. Black as can be, with a tan head. Licorice, roasted malt, alcohol, coffee and chocolate on the nose. Sweet in the mouth, full-bodied and almost sticky. Nice alcohol warmth as well. Chocolate, coffee, some licorice and even more sweetness. The finish is of the lasting kind, with alcohol, sugar, chocolate and coffee. Not an easy to drink beer, but wonderful. (080912)
