3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Deep black pour, small tan head. Aroma is deep and almost fruity, mostly roasted malt but with a belgian touch. Flavor is pretty sweet and sugary with lots of mild coffee upfront and a caramel sweetness that’s pretty big in the finish. Mouthfeel is thick with a lot of carbonation and a cloying sweet finish. Some smoke comes out afterwards to cut through the sweetness. Hop bitterness is there but does not affect the flavor at all, but the sweetness is a little too much. Overall a pretty good beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, 14C. Very black with a fine tan head that lasts quite well. Aroma of mocha with floral notes, dark/ burnt sugars, blackberries, fairly overt alcohol. Syrupy, low carbonation. Very sweet with fudgy caramel/ sweetmeat, coffee, surprisingly bright floral hoppy notes. Dries out towards the fairly bitter end. Alcohol doesn’t stick out as much as in the nose. Pretty harmonious and thoroughly pleasant, but no great depth - which, at 13%, it surely should have.

Draft at Max’s Taphouse. Pours midnight black with no real head. Aroma is dark chocolate, toffee, some floral notes. No carbonation here to speak of...just dark, syrupy liquid. Sticky sweet and lovely. Taste is caramel-sweet balanced with bitter coffee and cocoa nibs. Great balance here.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours black with a milk chocolate head. Aromas of coffee, dark roasted malt and burnt caramel, almost pungent (but nice), rum-and-vanilla-soaked prunes, clementines (hops?). Amazingly complex aroma. Taste is bitter-sweet-umami, driving to a sweeter but refined finish with a bit of pepper. Warming alcohol. Great body, oily mouthfeel, sticky, balanced bittersweet finish. Serious shit, right here. I will drag this one out tonight for sure.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml bottle. Pitch black colour with late awakening, average, frothy to creamy, fully lasting, moderately lacing, brown head. Rich dark malty aroma has notes of treacle, dark chocolate, coffee, mocha, roast, some liquorice, vestiges of bitter hop, enormous malt-spiciness. Taste is roasty dark malty, notes of coffee, dark chocolate, treacle, liquorice, strong bitter hoppy counterpart, cautious hints of warming alcohol; lasting, finish, oily, viscous texture, sticky palate. Strong and spicy, rich and complex, a massive attack on the senses - highly drinkable though. Excellent stuff.
