COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Belgian Royal Stout was brewed as a tribute to one of America’s best pubs. Jennifer and Chris Lively who run the place may be proud of Ebenezer’s Pub. Not only do they have 35 beers on draught, most of these are hard to find Supreme Belgian Ales. Above that, they have one of the most extensive bottle-conditioned beer lists through different bottling dates we have ever seen. Not only can you drink almost any Belgian beer, the worlds best brewery’s are represented. A lot of the guests talk about the American Kulminator, yet with that difference that the Belgian inspired food, is simply great. Black Albert was brewed and crafted with a 100% Belgian ingredients. Pours a blacker than black beer with an inch of dark tan head that lingers as it cascades into itself. Nice aroma of bitter-sweet chocolate, fresh torrified coffee beans, barley, candy sugar, complex fruits, and floral hops. At the front, there is spiced baker’s chocolate, fresh mocha, caramel like barley touches, and underlying hints of dried fruits which marries the back of your palate and features a Top, and well integrated but not overbearing hop flavour. The after-taste is well balanced and shows a panorama of extreme sensations like chocolate and coffee bitters, a plum cake richness that covers the palate, and a crisp impression of hop bitters that brings elegance and freshness into this massive brew. 33ck bottle. Pours opaque black with medium thick short-lived tan head that fades to a thin disc of mottled tan and brown spots. Dark fruit and cherry aroma with some chocolate and coffee sweetness, light earthy mustiness, and alcohol. Slight acidity with good bit of roasted grain character. Flavor starts chocolatey and cakey with notes of dry cocoa and red wine. Lots of chocolate and dark fruit/cherry. Earthy balancing bitterness with subtle resiny notes at mid-palate. The beer finishes somewhat dry with rich cocoa and fruit, mild toffee sweet character, and subtle acidity that enhances the perception of red wine and cherry. The mouthfeel is swishy and creamy with high - but pleasant and not harsh - carbonation. The beer is surprisingly only medium in body, accompanied by a very velvety texture. Overall, a very rich and luxurious big stout. It is surprisingly mellow - I expected something more extreme, but that’s not to say I’m disappointed: a very nice beer.

Originally reviewed: 9/6/09. Poured this one into my snifter. Pours a thick viscous deep black with a good inch and a half of dark tan head on top. Retention is fair, and it leaves a nice sticky coat of lace on the side of the glass. Right off the bat, this beer smells of freshly shaved cocoa, big coffee notes, and a slight twang of soy sauce. Maybe I’m getting used to it, but this characteristic fades quickly. This is a very creamy, smooth beer. A soft silky creaminess just coats the mouth with each and every sip. This is how I like my big stouts to feel. Well done. Where cocoa and coffee are big in the nose, they lack a little depth in the flavor dept. This beer is a little too tart for my liking. There’s definitely some dark chocolate bitterness present, but the predominant flavor I’m getting is a slightly sour fruity flavor. I’m not sure about this one. I can sense the alcohol definitively. This is a slow sipper for sure, and one at that. Some characteristics on this brew were spot on in my opinion, but lacking in others. Still, this was a pleasure to quaff.

Bottle. Perfect pitch black pour, with a thick, reddish brown and creamy head and a thick oily body. Marvellous dark aroma with liquorice, leather and lots of dark fruits. Nice roasted malty flavour, with coffee and dark chocolate, and notes of liquorice and fruits. Very nice finish.

Bottle. Batch 14, a 2008 i believe. Black with no head. very nice aromas of raisins, port and licorice on toasty grains. The flavor and mouthfeel morphs beautifully over a long arc. Sweetness and nutty, chocolate, coffee notes are present but restrained. Licorice and mild bitterness take over. It starts velvety slick and rides out with a tantilizing livliness before alcohol warmth creeps in. This is a marvelous complex beer that i wish i had many more of in my cellar.

Bottle pours black like used motor oil and is fairly viscous. Aromas are molasses, roasty, coffee, and dark chocolate. Tastes are mostly roasted malt and dark chocolate, but as the beer warms, the hops are noted and balance it out well. Overall, a delicious stout that I would gladly drink anytime.

Bottle thanks to bauermj. Deep black pour with thin yellow-tan head. Deep fudge, with light Belgian yeast character of cherry and vanilla. Some booze. Flavor is decadent Belgian chocolate, dark chocolate covered cherries, refined roasted malt, and faint vanilla. Just enough yeast action to make this interesting. A nice residual, almost grainy, roast. Great!
