4.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
I’ve had the pleasure of tasting this brew during several different occasions from the tap and from the bottle and I must say this is by far one of the best Imperial Stouts brewed; bar none! First, I don’t even know if this should be in the same class with other Imperial Stouts; it has its own distinctive style. The appearance of this brew has to be one of the darkest stouts I have ever seen. The head was so thick and velvety brown head that it looked like a shot of espresso…superb! It had a magnificent scent of sweet chocolate, dark roasted coffee beans and molasses along with roasted malt. The taste is just out of this world. Started off with a blitz of dark chocolate, espresso, and roasted malts; followed by light vanilla hoppy presence and fruit flavors with a touch of bitterness. The mouthfeel wasn’t too thick along with soft carbonation keeping the brew from tasting too syrupy. The complexity of this brew is such that 13% ABV is totally absent until the glass is almost empty and then you begin to say Wow, this is one hell of a beer! For me this was like drinking a fine Port that I could have sipped all night. I can’t say enough about the brews that are being produced at the Struise camp, but I do know that the rating of number one brewer in the world is without doubt; justified! This brew has taken Stouts to a whole new level!!!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thanks Huhzubendah for sharing the bottle! Poured into a snifter showing thin coffee rims, dark brown center, and no head.
The nose shows notes of caramel, raisin, burnt sugar and a light milk chocolate.
The palate is medium bodied and oily slick yet full carbonated. Flavors of malty caramel with burnt sugar and light raisins. A very light sweetness without being cloying. Very surprised.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Batch ’0’ 29/11/2012. Pours a thick black with a good brown head that dissipates rather quickly. Chocolate, coffee, molasses - perfectly balanced. Smooth mouthfeel. Full body. The alcohol very well integrated. This is a great stout and arguably one of the best in the world. The ABV is a bit much for me though.

Bottle, courtesy of SinH4, 2015 vintage, BB 21/05/2020. A pitch black and highly viscous draught. Intense ripe dark fruit, some coffee and chocolate. Heavy, yet not overwhelming, fine smooth carbonation, a bit boozy. Almost like eating a cake, sweet and sticky. Good balance though. A very nice beer.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
(Rating #7000!!!) Aged 1 year. Inky black pour giving a light tan foamy head. Rich roasty black malt aroma that’s dark and foreboding with some dark semibitter cocoa, roasted coffee, belgian candy sugar, a slight but deep fruitiness, and a mild earthy bitterness. Rich roasty flavor that’s sweetened by some raisin and belgian candy sugar, some bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee and a light bit of plum cake on the finish. Complex and deep and roasty but also stoutly and semisweet with a touch of deep cocoa/coffee.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Aroma is huge from dark chocolates and roasted malts. Sweetnes, soy sauce, licorice and raisins as well. Complex stuff. It has that aroma that you could smell all day long, and be completely satisfied with that. Taste is full bodied and smooth. Dark fruits, coffee, licorice and roasted malts mix together in a very complex and unique stout. This is how you brew a masterclass Imperial Stout. No fuzz, no extra special stuff, just pure craftmanship. This beer also changed quite a lot over time in the glass, so if you are going to enjoy one, let it breath and rest between the sips and you will get a lot of different dimensions in one glass. Top notch!
