4.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
I’ve had the pleasure of tasting this brew during several different occasions from the tap and from the bottle and I must say this is by far one of the best Imperial Stouts brewed; bar none! First, I don’t even know if this should be in the same class with other Imperial Stouts; it has its own distinctive style. The appearance of this brew has to be one of the darkest stouts I have ever seen. The head was so thick and velvety brown head that it looked like a shot of espresso…superb! It had a magnificent scent of sweet chocolate, dark roasted coffee beans and molasses along with roasted malt. The taste is just out of this world. Started off with a blitz of dark chocolate, espresso, and roasted malts; followed by light vanilla hoppy presence and fruit flavors with a touch of bitterness. The mouthfeel wasn’t too thick along with soft carbonation keeping the brew from tasting too syrupy. The complexity of this brew is such that 13% ABV is totally absent until the glass is almost empty and then you begin to say Wow, this is one hell of a beer! For me this was like drinking a fine Port that I could have sipped all night. I can’t say enough about the brews that are being produced at the Struise camp, but I do know that the rating of number one brewer in the world is without doubt; justified! This brew has taken Stouts to a whole new level!!!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Yet another great Struise beer courtesy of Travlr. At 8 years, Black Albert was the middle child of our aged Struise session. Unlike most middle children, though, Black Albert wasn’t easy to ignore. Thanks to midnight body and a rich, boozy aroma this Imperial Stout grabs your attention right away. With flavors of chocolate and coffee, Black Albert is like many Russian style Imperial Stouts. However, the dark fruit notes add an unmistakable Belgian flair. The latter elements give Black Albert a character similar to Port. While its complexity didn’t match that of Pannepot (older and less boozy, impressively), Black Albert was my 2nd favorite Struise. Damn, 2 out 3? It’s in the middle, again...

(Thanks, Gene! "Travlr")
A- Dark fruits, red wine, booze, oak.
A- Black color, black liquid, brown head.
T- Red wine, chocolate cake, dark fruits, booze, subtle sourness.
P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, strong finish.
O- While I would say that this certainly doesn’t live up to expectations, it was still good. And it did have like 8 years of age on it. According to the Lot B/06/BB, it was from 2008 so hey, age effects things. Not a lot of coffee or cocoa that I expect in an Imperial Stout but it was a good beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a near headless brownish head atop an opaque coloured body. Nose of soya sauce. Very soya flavour, deep prune, fig malt, and red wine. Pretty nice. Says the Best Before is April 2013 so I’m drinking this 2.5 years later.
