This Belgian Royal Stout was brewed as a tribute to one of America’s best pubs. Jennifer and Chris Lively who run the place may be proud of Ebenezer’s Pub. Not only do they have 35 beers on draught, most of these are hard to find Supreme Belgian Ales. Above that, they have one of the most extensive bottle-conditioned beer lists through different bottling dates we have ever seen. Not only can you drink almost any Belgian beer, the worlds best brewery’s are represented. A lot of the guests talk about the American Kulminator, yet with that difference that the Belgian inspired food, is simply great. Black Albert was brewed and crafted with a 100% Belgian ingredients. Pours a blacker than black beer with an inch of dark tan head that lingers as it cascades into itself. Nice aroma of bitter-sweet chocolate, fresh torrified coffee beans, barley, candy sugar, complex fruits, and floral hops. At the front, there is spiced baker’s chocolate, fresh mocha, caramel like barley touches, and underlying hints of dried fruits which marries the back of your palate and features a Top, and well integrated but not overbearing hop flavour. The after-taste is well balanced and shows a panorama of extreme sensations like chocolate and coffee bitters, a plum cake richness that covers the palate, and a crisp impression of hop bitters that brings elegance and freshness into this massive brew. A trip I took to Belgium a couple years back I brought the Black Albert, some Westy 12, and others to Hamburg and we did a couple tastings. The Westy 12 was grand, but everybody no exception was more and most flummoxed by the Black Albert. I got a few bottles today at Hop Duvel in Ghent, and I thought the Prearis Quad I had just before it was sublime, and hard to top, but the Black Albert (’Batch 0’) is such a no-contest slam down. I think what it does is take densest burnt smoky malts, and sends it all up like fireworks with brilliant yeasts, sugars, and finest carbonation. It is a rich, complex, heavy-body-by-nature thing, that somehow instead manages to explode, into sparklers and stars.

Bottle at home. Three year old bottle. The colour is pitch black and a very small light brown head. Aroma of chocolate, lactose, oak, coffee, black currants and dried fruit. The flavour explodes in coffee beans, BBQ-sauce caramel, dark chocolate, ash and licorice. Has a silky and soft mouth feel, full-bodied and a balanced bitterness. A rich and roasted ale. Nice and heavy.

From an aged bottle, it pours a super dark, thick black, with a thining tan head. The aroma is sweet dark fruits, with a coffee background . The mouthfeel is very creamy, with a chocolate influenc. Some cherry on the finish.

With Z, pours a pitch black pour with a mocha head. Nose is dark fruits, malt with mild black licorice . Taste is sweet dark fruits, alcohol subdued despite the ABV, with a nice confluence of malt and hops . Finishes on the same dark tasting notes with a moderately long finish. A nice sipper ! Quaff Score 7 /10

Bottle in London. A deceptive beast of a big beer -- the 13% ABV is so well hidden that I thought it was 9% until the next morning. There’s a lot of chocolate up-front, but the complexity comes after that when there’s a surprising mix of stone fruits and toffee. Quite a tasty, complex stout and it reminded me a lot of Kate the Great.

Vintage 2015.
