4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
On tap at DLD ’09. Wow! An imperial belgian sour stout!? The complexities really do work out incredibly. With the aroma, roasted black and caramel malts galore, also mocha, medium fruits, and sourness throughout that is great, with notes of sour berries and melons. Very unique smelling. Visually, it has a good creamy, coffee cream head, good retention and lacing, a darker, thicker but not motor oil-like body, and milk mocha in color. First off about the taste of this one, it has a great full flavored, medium-thick body as flavor gets everywhere, making it hard to think about anything but this beer while drinking it. Wonderful balance too with all of the complexities and uniqueness being displayed here. It starts off with roasty, creamy mocha, a nutty amaretto, black malts, and caramel cookie malt, but then sour Belgian aspects of the beer come out and Black Albert starts to separate itself from other members of this style. Green apples, dark, sweet berries, with a twinge of acidity. The finish continues to build on everything to make a nice well balanced climax. Nothing is overly sweet or heavy about this one either. Really, just an exceptional, unique, and complex brew that I am very happy to have tried. Top notch.

11.2oz bottle purchased from craftshack. Pours a thick black color with a finger of creamy dark mocha head. Aroma is sweet and fruity, with nice notes of chocolate, roasted malt, and caramel. Taste is sweeter then expected. Dark fruits, roasted malt, brunt sugar, and sweet chocolate fudge.

Black with chocolate colored head. Strawberry, dried red fruits, coffee, milk chocolate, then more tart fruits. Later more dark roasted notes. Medium-full bodied, lovely creamy texture with thick carbonation. Very, very good.

Topbier !

Bottle at Avenue Pub New Orleans
AROMA: dark chocolate, coffee, nuts, vanilla,
APPEARANCE: black, brown foam,
TASTE: light sweetness, medium bitterness,
PALATE: full body, creamy, lively, bitter, long finish, astringent,
OVERALL: a really fantastic stout with that many levels of aromas coming through; 13% ABV means it does not leave much room for more beers...

Best before Jul, 2015
Pours nice dark black with a solid mocah sheet of loose bubbles. Smells of chocolate, date, nougat, graham and hints of licorice. Nice nose. Flavor carries leather, tobacco, dates, figs, brown glazed molasses, some bits of dark plum and a hint of toasted graham cracker. Slightly thin body and low carb with a semidry finish. Nice beer, I would drink a bit of this on tap at the right price. The alcohol is surprisingly absent in the beer despite the hefty 13% marking.

The aroma and flavor are powerful alcoholic. The flavor has a lot more burn than the aroma lets on. It's not bad once you get past the burn.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
33cl Bottle: BBD Sep 15, poured into a Westmalle chalice at home on 3rd Dec 13.
Scummy head of tanned sparsely spaced bubbles: a collar surrounded the glass. The body was surprise, surprise: black. Luckily the smell, taste and mouthfeel make up for the poor looks.
Chocolate notes in the aroma, some semi-sweetened coffee hints also. The taste follows the smells nicely, chocolate and coffee leading the flavours, just like the aroma.
Smooth and rich body: this is a well made Stout, Imperial or otherwise.

Black with rich, medium-brown head. Aroma is of fruity-chocolate and earthy herbage, perhaps even a bit on the vegetal side, although my drinking companion did not observe this. Flavor is huge chocolate toast bordering on soy sauce. Some herbal hops and sap. Heavy, syrupy palate with considerable fine carbonation. A nice slow drinker!
