kkearn (690), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 26, 2008 Updated: Jul 7, 2008 330mL bottle (HUGE thanks to my cousin, ggaughan, for picking this up at the brewery and shipping it to me!) Pours pitch black, capped with a large mocha colored head. Rich aromas of toffee, caramel, cocoa powder, dried fruit, and roasted grain. Bittersweet, dark chocolate flavor up front, with some mocha, dark fruit and spice, which are gradually joined by bitter coffee notes. Long, bittersweet finish, with just a hint of alcohol. Velvety smooth, luscious mouthfeel. Beautiful beer. Thanks again, Greg!
The_Epeeist (984), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 15, 2008 11.2 oz bottle, imported by Shelton Bros. Ebony with a dense tan head that leaves a thick, lacy ring. Nose is licorice and coffee with subtle barnyard and earth. Silky body with a tang and airy alcohol. Starts very sweet with molasses and smoky honey. Notes of chocolate and raisin finishing with a firm bitter bite. A distinctively Belgian take on an Imperial Stout. fiulijn (5900), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Oct 13, 2008 Bottle from Barley Wine, Copenhagen Dark brown colors on the glass borders, black heart; very big head, persistent. When poured in the glass, the aroma shows a true Belgian character; it changes later, when warmer, into a crossover between a Barley Wine and an Imperial Stout, sweet caramel, almost woody. Good body, based on a medium sweet caramel flavor with chocolate notes, and only mild roasted malt, possibly disappearing at the end; it doesn’t show the alcohol in the mouth, but with a punch in the stomach. Good, very pleasant to drink even while getting warmer; it gets the average rating for good beers. Jukkabro (2405), Tampere, Finland Oct 12, 2008 Black colored with medium sized beige head. Rich hopped aroma with licorice, chocolate, berries, flowers, raisins, vinous tone and caramel, interesting one. Near full bodied. Flavor is sweet with sticky sugar tone, caramel and roastiness dominate this flavor still. Mild alcohol in still sweet aftertaste, caramel and some licorice also here. Well, good combination on Imperial stout and BW, still hard to get the needed balance from here. rane (367), Nibe, Denmark Oct 9, 2008 Bottle. I have been in a lot of doubt about this beer, from the start I feared it was just another overrated IS, but as I read the ratings I got curious to taste. And it´s nice!
Coffebrown with a huge brown head. Perfect appearanc. Aroma initially hopp dominated with some underlaying roasted malt and chocolate. After a while the belgian touch shows up with dried fruits. Taste hoppy and sweet, roasted malts and chocolate and a little bitterness in the end. The alcohol is very well hidden, this one is a cheater, I wouldn´t have expected it to be above 8%. Hopefully not the last time I have tasted this one. Dedoulequeen07 (116), london, Greater London, England Oct 7, 2008 Bottle at the disco party shack chris O’s. Black with a creamy beige thick head. Aroma of caramel malt, dark chocolate and sweet toffee. Date, fig and walnut cake runs through the aftertaste. Goodmouthfeel and not too clawing for its percentage.
