Bottled. Pours black with a medium sized, tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, berries and coffee. Sweet flavor that ends up bitter and with some alcohol. Full bodied, creamy to oily texture and soft carbonation. A great impy.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draught @ Brouwer’s Café:   Pitch black, deep brown head, large, nice lacing.   Rich roasted malt nose, a touch fruity, could be Blackberry.   Has a slight sweet alcohol nose that does seem a little Portish.   A bit more berry like on the tongue, sweet, roasty, with a strong malt base.   I can see the Port aging in this as well.   Not a complex beer, as it seems very well blended.   Smooth, soft roast, a bit of Blackberry but not too much, with a soft Port like alcohol presense.   Body and mouthfeel are fairly full bodied.   Faint astringent note on the backside.   Residual berry like notes on the finish, along with soft alcohol, roasted malts, and Port.   Pretty tasty, soft, easy to put back, blended well.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Brouwer’s, Seattle. Part of Big Wood 2013. Pours a very dark purple-black, little tan head. Aroma is huge, rich with port and raspberries. Rich, boozy. Body is surprisingly lively, and hot. Finish is slightly roasty, lots and lots of wood, maybe more than anything else I’ve had. Good but not jaw-dropping. Finish exceptionally long.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Sampled @ Dak’s Black Friday tasting. Squid ink pour with a small chestnut head. Loads of tart blackberry accompanied by vanilla, oak, dark fruit, brownie batter, and some vinous qualities. Rich, complex, creamy. A really good beer!

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
On tap at Brouwer’s Cafe for Big Wood 2013, pours jet black with a beautiful small brown head. Aroma of blackberries, roast, vanilla and whiskey - super complex. Flavour is orgasmic, with blackberries, vanilla, chocolate, and light whiskey overtones. Incredibly complex, smooth and amazingly well-integrated. Soft and velvety on the palate, with everything in great proportion. Phenomenal.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Brouwer’s Big Wood 2013. Black pour. Boozy black malts at the forefront. This was something of a disappointment to me -- one-dimensional, with not nearly as much blackberry or port as I’d have liked. Molasses, with some sweet red wine toward the finish, and while this may be an off keg, I wanted more from such a hyped brew. Big, fat beer -- definitely good -- just not great.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black pour with small tan head. Aroma is predominantly of blackberries with roasty malt undertones and burnt sugar. Taste is similar the berry character is the first thing you notice, then notes of port and subtle notes of oak as well. Very complex. The abv is little warming but not overpowering. Very enjoyable
