COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Black Damnation series is a dark twist of Urban’s mind. His idea is to realize a dozen beers with the use of Black Albert, and over a period of two years, that are as black as hell, filthy rich in the nose and with a massive taste.

Black Damnation II is yet another blend with the use of Hel & Verdoemenis from Brouwerij De Molen. This time a level more complex than BD I. 50% of Black Albert was used that matured for a while on whole coffee beans out of a craft Columbian coffee plantation. 25% of H&V was used that aged for 6 months on JD barrels at Struise. Another 25% of Cuvée Delphine was used.

Beware: labels are the same, taste however isn’t. Some bottles are recognizable because of he handwritten 2 on them.

Bottle (330 ml). Vintage 2011 (?). From kraddel, thanks! Deep black with a small mostly lasting thick beige head and little lacing. Aroma is vegetal/green pepper (similar to Kopi Loewak) with dark chocolate, coffee and light spices. Taste is much better with dark chocolate, coffee, cinnamon and a nice warming finish. Full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Thick mouthfeel. Roasty finish. Very good RIS. If it was not of the "green peppers" aspect, I would love it. Quite complex too.

Bottle in the hotel room post Zythos. Black pour with thin brown head. Aroma is vegetal, intense cold pressed coffee, lots of licorice, light cinnamon. Taste is spicy, coffee, sweet molasses, nice roasty. Palate is full bodied, boozy yet not annoyingly so. Nice ris.

Bottle from Cali. Slightly sharpie marker in the nose. Lots of alcohol. Taste is slightly astringent with some acidic coffee. I’m afraid this one is on the downward slope. Thin, watery mouthfeel.

Bottle share thanks to Homer321. Deep dark mostly black thick pour with light brown head. Smokey, roasty, sweet chocolate, grainy aroma. Roasty, smokey, astringent, alcohol. Just doesn’t seem right.

Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma has some dark fruits and a bit if sweet dark chocolate. Flavor opens with dark fruits and moves into smoky/ashy coffee notes...very minimal booze and barrel presence...roasty bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is dry and roasty/smoky/dark fruity and warming. Just decent.

HMOG 2014. Last time I had a Black Damnation variant was at the Brickstore. This time is was not sitting at the bar. Not boozy for the abv, but big rich sweet mocha/coffee, cocoa. Thick, sweet. Some fruits. Very velvety smooth.

HMOG 2014. Boozy earthy scent. They weren’t kidding when they called this a mocha bomb. Chocolate is all over the flavor with a lively candy spice. Pours dark brown and a tan head.

Aroma has coffee, whisky, wood, roast, chocolate. Black coloured beer with a thin lace. The taste is sweet and bitter, has roast, light peated whisky, coffeebeans and some chocolate. Full bodied, oily textured. Nice stuff. Good balance and good complexity.

On tap at t’ Antwaerps Bierhuyske. Had to get the Struise on tap, even if coffee beers aren’t my favourite thing. Underwhelmed. Expectations too high? A bit cold from the keg? I mean it was still really nice beer, well balanced lightly roasty strong stout. Actually not as much coffee as expected. But not the most memorable beer of the evening.

330 ml bottle purchased 15 months ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($16.99). Mark had actually carried the bottle back from Belgium! Pours a pitch black hue with one finger of long-lasting creamy mocha-colored foam. AROMA has a distinctive vegetal element (raw chili peppers comes to mind), fine dark high-end fair-trade java, charred malts, dark baker’s chocolate, with hints of bourbon and vanilla. FLAVOR of very dark and earthy artisan coffee, triple espresso shot mocha, creamy vanilla, nutty burnt malts, dark fudge, and smooth bourbon barrel. Finishes with some nice roasty bitterness. Heavy mouthfeel. Except for a bit of pleasant bourbon, the very high ABV is really concealed here. I feel that the coffee (though very high quality) overpowers the bourbon facet somewhat. It could be better balanced between the coffee and bourbon, but this still comes off superbly well. Would like to see a lot more of this series hit the U.S. (413, 848)
