At cellar temperature and into a shallow chalice. The lid pops off with a burst of chocolaty ganache and muscatels. A quick waft and some tar, molasses, yeasty dough, chargrilled beef rump and Worcestershire sauce comes through. A deeper sniff and you get a sense of the alcohol as heated fusels with a layer of fruit mince pie underneath. Oh, yes, yum! Pours like used engine oil; a viscous black liquor that foams up one of the darkest tan heads I have ever seen. Shortlived, this recedes back to a wafer atop its opaque, lifeless body. Sticky, bold, robust and viscous on the palate. Smooth, oily and treacly in feel. For 13% ABV it is warming but well restrained. Strips the tongue but excites the olfactories. Lots of bitter/sweet chocolate, tar, treacle, molasses, muscatel fruit, port-wine, roasted coffee bean, scorched timber and vanillin comes through but the Islay malts of Caol Ila fail to show. Alas it is an extraordinarily complex meld of aroma and flavour. A very slow sipping beer. Doughy, bitter malt finish; wood and a touch of lavender resides amongst a little meaty, umami savoury sweetness. I have to say this is gold. A lovely brew. Surprisingly good!! Sampled @ Mikkeller Bar SF. Not sure what happened her but this was certainly a miss. Squid ink pour with four or five massive bubbles that erupted quickly, leaving a very still beer in their wake. Aroma was subtle with cocoa, charred oak, whisky, and raw wood. Flavor was similar. Very dry, peaty, and chalky. Thin bodied. Not a fan...hope my bottle is better!

On tap @ít Antwaerps Bierhuyske. Pours black with light brown foam. Alcoholic aroma. Taste bit chocolate, bit alcohol. Really nice one again.

33cl, bottle @ Kulminator. Oily black colour. Full body. Very complex aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and peated whisky. Very good!

Jet black, minimal head. Strong aroma of coffee, oak and sweet dried fruits. Massive whisky in first taste - great peat and wood flavors. Huge and thick. Whoa. Very little carbonation.

Bottle - one of those little 11.2 oz guys thanks to Alen! Says best by 2015 on the bottle. Unlike the new 750ís, this is not tart at all. Infection free zone. Pour is inky black with a large creamy brown head that lasts for a looonnnnggg time and laces well. Aroma is roasty, dark sugars, licorice. Flavor follows, light sweet and heavy bitter, strong anise/licorice notes. Not much smoke or peat here, some whiskey, barrel notes and perhaps some peatiness in the finish. Fairly light bodied, high carbonation. Bitter as hell on the finish. Not bad.

750ml. Opened after BD. Black as night pour. Nose has some Belgian tartness. With a bit of smoky scotch. Taste is scotch and stout. Like if bourbon county used scotch barrels instead.

Pours jet black and minimal head after settling. Nose is tart and yeasty. Body is thick. Drinks like a sweeter imp stout. Plums dark cherry flavors. Good but state side this hog was 45 bucks. Falls a bit short.

Draught sample @Brugs BF 2014, ZA. Luring dessert aroma, leading into a perfectly designed, monodimensional bourbon-infused Wiener Kaffee with a whisp of cask smoke, making it both viscous and dry, never sticky or too sweet. Lingering, palate-coating finish, hopjes drenched in bourbon reduction.

Draft at the Sybarite Pig in Boca. (Danís birthday!!) Snifter pour. Black as night and slightly oily. Small head lingered and laced. Awesome aroma of heavy roasted malts, scotch, vanilla, spices, and Brazil nuts. The taste was interesting with the scotch barrel really knocking on the palette up front. Smooth booze and barrel on the back-end. Didnít seem like a 13% however. Medium carb, full body. Good but not a favorite.
