Bottle at home. Thanks kalle koks. Bottle from 2010. Pours an almost reddish black. Siruppy motor oil. No head. Nice light brown lacings. Aroma: of course you get a whiff of alcohol, caramel and burnt sugar. Lovely bourbon and vanilla notes. Along with sweet liquorice. Roasted coffee and dried fruits. Plums, figs and prunes. Mouthfeel is full and quite siruppy, you get some warmth from the alcohol. But the abv is actually well hidden. Low carbonation. Taste follows the nose. With emphasis on vanilla and dried fruits. Very sweet, but not cloying. Some nice roasted bitterness in the end. A pleasure to try this.

Shocked at the drinkablility of this one. It isn’t drinkable but it isn’t as overbearing as it should be. It is extremely thick and complex.

Wow. This is delicious. I’m kinda blown away. Anywho, it pours motor oil black. Looks a lot like motor oil but with a tight dark brown cap. The aroma is huge with coffee and dark chocolate. Tons of it. There’s some nice dark fruit in there as well. Lots of molasses and caramel. Massive flavor. Sweet with all sorts of chocolate. It’s like drinking a very fancy wonderful brownie. I can’t believe there isn’t more booze to the beer. Feel is thick. Very thick. This is one of the best stouts I’ve ever had. Delicious.

Poured from 750ml bottle. Pours black as night with thin tan head. There are a lot of soft floaty yeasts in this. Alcohol is up front. There is lots of smoke and some barrel. I suspect that this beer is a little overrated.

This beer might be the fourth(???) I’ve ever given perfect marks to. It is 26%, but drinks like a 10% beer. The pour is black with minimal dark-tan head. The aroma and flavors are both very complex and full. In all, this drinks like a perfect version of Black Albert, which is a well crafted, yet deeply flawed (IMO) stout from Struise. The smoke and bite that overwhelm in Albert are present here, but well balanced with a malt that brings the flavors together in a way similar to Mikkeler Black Hole, but far superior in execution. Dying to get my hands on a bottle now...

It’s funny that pirates were always going around searching for treasure, and they never realized that the real treasure was the fond memories they were creating.

On tap with Barry and Andy at Monks after the NY shoobie crowd died down a bit. Seriously, younger sucked this year, stay in your own concrete jungle, Philly is ours. Pours pitch black with small beige head and lacing, palate and mouthfeel were super sticky and rich. Notes of heavy molasses, dark chocolate, light peat, roast, raisin, vanilla, toffee, and licorice. Medium to fuller bodied with an almost jizz stain stickyness to it. At 26 percent this might be the scariest beer of all time. Tasted like a 10 to 11 percent stout at most, i only had a glass, but if you indulged in multiples, its almost guaranteed that some innocents are getting deaded on your drive home. Cheers

On tap at Monk’s Monday Madness, sampled side-by-side with the Single Black version. Completely opaque, thick, syrupy, with a medium-sized brown head. Aroma is slightly of Wheaties cereal, but as it warms, gives off huge fudge, chocolate, and oak. The flavor is like liquified fudge; massive chocolate, cocoa, and vanilla, surprisingly smooth, with a little bitter cocoa character. Full-bodied, smooth, creamy, sticky; a little booze is evident, but nowhere near 26%. Top-notch. A really, really good beer, that I could (for better or worse) drink quite a bit of. [1104]

Draft at Monks Cafe. Opaque brown pour that started with a dark brown head that disappeared entirely after 5 minutes. Extremely rich dark stout. Burnt coffee grounds. Very bittersweet chocolate. Molasses. Raisins. Prunes. Dates. Medicinal. Turpentine. Charcoal. Strong bourbon notes. Pitch black caramel cherry cordial. Probably as an intensely dark a stout as I have had while still having a wonderful creaminess. 26% ABV is too large to hide but still finishes comparatively smooth. Spectacular!!!

Poured from a 750ml bottle, huge thanks to Doug. Wow, this beer is amazing. A big rich chocolate, coffee, slight sour, sticky, oil slick, caramel, raisin, leather, slight metallic. It is noted,this is not for pregnant women. The alcohol is warming, a full mouth feel. I think this may have stained my glass. Thanks Doug.
