COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A blend of Kate The Great (10.79% ABV) and Black Albert (13% ABV), brewed by master brewer Todd Mott of the Portsmouth Brewery in USA and Urbain Coutteau of Struise. This time our beer was fractionally frozen to -15 C over a period of 20 days. This method allows the water which is present in beer, slowly but surely to be separated from the alcohol, and allowing the volume % to rise. Another Eisbock process but modified a la Struise, still allows the result to be called beer. "Special K" has previously been aged 10 months in Noval Port barrels before undergoing the Eisbock process.

Enjoyed from tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Deep black with a good chocolate brown head. Aroma is raisins, plums, figs, cherry, chocolate. Oily mouthfeel, well balanced and not boozy, dry finish. Taste is chocolate, raisins, plum, brown sugar, touch of oak, hint of soy sauce and a touch of coffee. Definitely wouldnt pick it as a 22%.

Tap at CBC 2012. Poured a good number of this bad boy but unfortunately everyone was all about the Messy instead. The pour is ink with sheets of Martian red lacing after a reverse cascade head. Nose is a bit too much apple for me, some acetaldehyde, red apple. The Messy had a similar off character but the sharp Scotch blends in to make the acetaldehyde smell more like calvados. But Im thinking its an oxidation problem during the eisbocking process. Taste is roasty, bitter, sharp, loads of pithy and zesty citrus hops. Mild lactic acid in the palate with yogurt really bitter roastiness. Dry finish with muted vinous port character. Simpler. Easier to enjoy than you would think. Well see how the bottle I have holds up but methinks its time to crack it at the next tasting. 5/12/2012 7/5/8/4/14=3.8

Draft at CBC. Black pour with a small brown head. Aroma is sweet, fruits, coffee, chocolate and licorice. Sweet flavour with fruit, port, bitter chocolate. Expected alcohol warmth but hidden in the flavour. Full bodied with low carbonation. Another great high alcohol beer by Struise!
